Babies bed

Im hoping you girls can answer a question for me that im unsure about.

My mum said that a newborn needs to be placed in a small bed ie moses basket or cradle for the first few months. As i said that i was thinking of placing baby straight into a cot to save on costs of buying a moses basket that will only get used for a small period of time.

Is this true that baby will need a small bed at first? if so when can they progress to a normal sized cot?

its entirely your choice if you use a cot straight away or a moses basket/crib etc. Its said that newborns find a smaller space more comforting in the first few months as it mimics the small space they had in the womb. I also know people who never use a moses basket/crib and their baby was just as happy and contented. You should speak to your midwife if you have any doubts or questions as i'm sure s/he'd be able to answer your questions.

As for us personally, we have decided not to have a crib/moses basket (mainly due to cost efficency) and have decided on an inbetween of a bassinett travel cot.
We figured we'd be out and about with baby in the first few months as our house is way to small to have people come to us to visit baby. So a moses basket or crib would be pointless for us. The one we went for is the Graco one. its 20% smaller than an average travel cot so its smaller and cosier for baby but its compact for travel and in terms of cost efficency it will last so much longer and we can use as a playpen later on
this is the one we got

Thats really useful information thanks. As you have just made me realize that my mum and DF's mum will want to have baby on occasions and i will need to supply a bed for them. The travel cot is the perfect solution

And the one you have chose is really really nice.

When do you plan to buy it?

I bought a moses basket but i did get it second hand. Allthough the baby wont be in it for long its handing for using up and down the stairs if you want to keep a closer eye on baby.

But its totally down to preference.

we have a bassinet. but we got it second hand for only $15 (well my mom did ).
If she hadn't gotten it for us, bubs would be sleeping in the baby suite we have.. it's like that one up there but full size. It's got the changer/bassinet/play pen all in one. OH's sister bought that for our baby shower.
And if that hadn't been bought for us, we would have been setting up his crib. So.. the only reason we are even using one is because we have generous family!
I wouldn't worry to much about it. If you dont want to use one or cannot afford it, then dont. It's really just your preference.

Just make sure to swaddle the baby before placing him in the crib and he will feel contented too. Snug as a bug! No need for extra expenses. Babies grow up so fast and a crib would last longer. If you get a moses basket as a gift, now that's another story...Good luck!

We were just gonna get a cot and try swaddling baby, cos we can´t really afford a moses basket and then a cot within say 6 months. I also like the idea of baby sleeping bags instead of sheets etc. I think that would make baby feel more secure than just being covered in sheets.

we're getting a rocking crib off a relative of my OH shes just recently had a boy so im made up over that i didnt relish the thought of paying for a moses basket/crib and the bedding when its only used for such a sort period of time until it goes into the cot.
