what to expect on a doppler

hi girls, right i've bought a doppler and used it for the first time about half an hour ago.
when i went to my 16 week midwife app i heard the heart beat and it was really loud and fast. however on my doppler i listened to my heart beat which was really loud and fast and when i found what i thought was the babies heart beat it was really quiet and beating but really slowly! the midwife told me that babies HB's are always faster then ours.
so what does this mean!?!? im worried now. has anyone else had this problem?
xx

Could just be the cord. My MW put the doppler on my tummy at my last appointment and i thought she had the HB but she said thats the cord wooshing away... then moved it and found the HB. I just got a doppler and used it for the first time this morning. His HB was REALLY low, like almost on my lady parts lol then like 5 minutes later it moved when I looked again. So just keep looking till you get a fast solid beat. It is hard but just keep trying

By the way... rule #1 with at home dopplers is never get stressed out!

I have a dopler and what you can hear is the placenta its a lot slower and deeper you need to fish around a lot more for the baby's heartbeat. No need to worry

I noticed that I hear better when I use a lot of oil on my belly maybe that;'s why? Don't worry though! some days you won't be able to find it at all! it's just the baby has so much room in there! Could be anywhere really

It is very very easy to pick up your own HR even low down near your groin. The Fetal Heart is more of a thumping sound which can sound similar to your HR but yours is slower and the placenta is more like a swooshing sound. If you are unfamiliar with interpreting a fetal heart try not to get too stressed. It certainly has caused distress in the past when a women can't find the FH due to the baby's position or think the baby's heart rate is too fast during active periods etc. Sometimes it is down to the user's technique and experience etc. Keeping an eye on baby's movements in a day is also a good indicator of the baby's wellbeing.

I've picked up my heartbeat on the doppler loads of times. I think there's a big artery that runs down the side. It could be that that your hearing? When in doubt, feel for your pulse, and if they are going at the same time, it's your own heart.
