Whats the point in locking the guy up though? That will only take him away from his 'wife' and child and mean he cannot work and earn money to support them

I recommend some of you take the time to read up on the Roma in Eastern Europe

It isn't legal to marry at 11 year old. It isn't a legal ceremony - it is a cultural ceremony, not recognized by the Bulgarian government. That's why he is facing charges.

Yes, it is common to be married at 13 and be a mom in Roma culture. School and education, especially for girls, is not a priority at all. Try being a Roma woman in Bulgaria and getting hired - even with a diploma of some sort?

I couldn't imagine it for myself, but I'm Hungarian and the history/culture of the Roma is certainly unique - this really isn't a case of him being a dirty perv and parents dropping the ball.

I had read a much more informative article and the parents were saying they were pleased and it really highlighted the fact it was more culturally accepted. The 19 year old said she lied about her age and she said she lied because she wanted him to like her. So really she played an adult game and got an adult result.

I agree it is wrong but in their country it is no more wrong than like it happening to a 16 year old here. It is young but not as much of a shocker, you know?

What baffles me is... How can he be allowed to LEGALLY marry her but then get told it was ILLEGAL to have sex with her? Something doesn't add up there.

Like Aliss said, it wasn't a legal, government sanctioned marriage. It was just a ceremony that amongst their culture is considered binding.

In the full article it says both grandmothers have parental responsibility for the baby so the girl can still have her childhood. I think the first article is going for the shock factor a bit too much, once you read it properly it's still pretty shocking that she's so young, but it puts it into perspective a bit better.

1. The girl is a child that was bullied at school.

2. A 19 year man took advantage of the situation and her gratitude and raped an 11 year old CHILD (I am sorry an 11 year old cannot consent to sex with a 19 year old).

3. Of course she is going to make a comment like her baby is a doll because she is a CHILD and has no concept of being a parent.

If the guy was 13 I would agree with blaming this couple for their stupidity but with the age difference the word "couple" doesn't even apply here.

Ok reading Aliss' post has clarified things for me and put it into cultural perspective.
