Oh it just keeps getting better- not :(

Just had a phone call from the doctors asking me to go back and get a prescription as they have received the results from my swab and I need antibiotics. No explanation given at all as they were closing.

Get the prescription and its for Metronidazole. I dont like the sound of this and reading up on it it says its not really the safest to take in pregnancy and should only be prescribed if absolutely essential.

Problem is though that infection can bring on pre term labour and I have just come out of hospital following a bleed and threatened prem labour so feel I need to take it. I will ring Docs and midwife tomorrow and try and get more info.

Anyone else had to take this or know anyone who has?

can you not take it until Monday? They should definitely explain this to you before giving drugs. That's just unprofessional!

I know, thats my plan. I am going to try ringing tom and see what they have to say, I havent handed the prescription in yet. I reckon its that BV, an imbalance in bacteria that if left untreated in pregnant women can bring on pre term labour and low birth weight babies but will see if I am right. Think only other alternative antibiotic is Clindamycin.

Oh dear, how stressful for you. I do think you should obtain more information from your doctor and I'd also recommend asking a local pharmacist for their opinion. I was put on a very strong drug for my chronic morning sickness and after reading the leaflet that came with the medication and looking it up online, I was incredibly unsure on whether to take it. I discussed it with my doctor and asked a pharmacist I'd been going to for years, and the latter in particular was able to give me information that made me feel like I could make a decision.

In your case, it sounds like it might be a case of the benefit outweighing the risk? I.e the risk of the medication being less of a risk than not treating the infection and it leading to a premature labour. From what you've read, they say its only prescribed when it is essential so unfortunately it sounds like your doctor thinks it's essential to treat your infection.

Good luck, I hope your doctor or midwife can put your mind to rest and that the infection gets cleared up quickly.

I took it in early pregnancy before I knew i was pregnant and it didn't do any harm at all. It's probably the best for the type of infection and they want to make sure it's gone since it's more dangerous to have the infection than it is to take the medicine. At this stage in pregnancy you are past the point of birth defects so you should be fine. Baby is just gaining weight and getting bigger now.

get more info first hun as you said then its a case of weighing up the pros and cons. I know docs dont usually give metranidazole in pregancy so found out what its for 1st. if you are already at risk of pre term labour theni will probably turn out that you should take the antibiotics hun. Easy to say but dont stress hun speak to doc on mon, few days wont make a difference infection wise

hun metranidazole is totally totally fine in pregnancy, its the alternative they give if you are allergic to peniccillin or whatever, i had it for a urine infection at 10 weeks and in surgery 3 days ago they put a metronideazole pessary inside to stop infection, the infection is far more important for your pregnancy than taking the tablets, especially after the bleed etc, the pills are 100percnt safe honestly xx

check out this website. it's a reliable source for drug info (btw. i work in a pharmacy & hubby is a pharmacist):
http://emc.medicines.org.uk/medicine...+mg/#PREGNANCY

I would take them if I were you. The docs check out what medication is safe for use in pregnancy before prescribing and some antibiotics work better for certain types of infection than others due to their mode of action. some other antibiotics may be considered more safe but if they don't work for the infection then that would be no good either. xxx
