Metronidazole is used to treat Bacterial Vaginosis. It is fine for use in pregnancy. Most medications will state that they arent recommended for pregnant woman, as none have been really tested extensively enough to say they are completely safe. If you are really concerned, then it would be fine to ask for clindamycin instead. Both are effective treatments.

Hi,

I am only 9 1/2 weeks and had to take this a couple of weeks ago. A 1 week course. I checked with the chemist who said it was ok to take. I did get very constipated while taking this though and had to also take lactulose to ease the constipation pain. (try to swallow the tablets quickly too as they taste awful if they dissolve!!)

Thanks everyone. I will give my docs and midwife a ring first just to be doubly sure that this BV is the reason they have prescribed these antibiotics, I dont even know what was on my swab yet. I know its nothing majorly nasty as theyd have called me in and asked to speak to my partner and plus I have had all the blood tests.

After sleeping on it, I do reckon I will end up taking these antibiotics as the thought of having an infection that can put the baby at risk of coming early and being of low birth weight doesnt bear thinking about. x

Hun, sorry for late response, wasn't online yesterday. That's the usual dose...make sure you take it for the whole 5 days or else the infection may not be cleared completely. He also assured me it is commonly prescribed in pregnancy. xx
