I've been told that you should only really sleep / lye down on your sides now, but is is really bad if you do this on your back ? Is this is also why they sometimes warn you against some types of pilates too ?
really? I always sleep on my back... i think exercising on your back is advised against and pilates is ok but certain moves you will be told not to do.
Your ligaments and muscles are a lot softer and prone to straining in pregnancy - so a yoga or pilates move you could do easily pre-pregnancy can cause serious damage when you're expecting!
As for lying on your back - there is an artery which can be compressed by the weight of your bump while you lie flat and the theory is that it can deprive the baby of oxygen etc. However - we all move an awful lot during sleep and I'm sure if our body/baby was uncomfortable you'd unconciously move. I've heard MWs say just sleep how your most comfy x
My midwife was pregnant when I was and she slept on her back the whole time. Obviously there are better ways to sleep but it's better you sleep on your back and get sleep than get no sleep...
