Wow, apparently juice is just as bad for you as soda!

I know we are all paying closer attention to our diet these days. I thought some of you would be interested in this article. Their reasoning behind the conclusion actually does make sense!

Fruit Juice isn't so great...

And the article is actually referring to 100% fruit juice, not the extra sugary fruit flavored stuff.

1 glass of fruit juice contains more than a third of the GDA of sugar. To be honest it doesn't bother me in the slightest, as it's an easy way to get one of my 5 a day and I don't have much sugary stuff in my diet anyway. But the article failed to mention that fizzy drinks have loads of chemicals in them, which is the reason I only drink them very occasionally. Personally I'm far more worried about the chemicals than a bit of sugar!

I don't think I'd quite consider natural fructose in juice equal to the high fructose corn syrup found in soda.

Just thought it was an interesting take on something that I doubt many people even think twice about. I think their main point was that giving kids as much juice as they want thinking it's healthy isn't really doing them any good because it's just feeding them sugar in the end. (natural sugar is still sugar) And if you are trying to diet it's not doing you any more good and you may as well be drinking any other sugary drink.

I'm not saying soda is better for you obviously, but Pepsi is actually trying to be less bad by offering a version with natural sugar in it. It's called Pepsi Throwback. Also, for several years now the benefits of caffeine have been in the news a bit more so it seems like drinking soda in moderation isn't quite as evil as people make it out to be. Caffeine is actually very good for your memory apparently.

It also reinforces the idea I had when my kids were little that there was no good reason to give them juice when they hit 6 months old like everyone kept pushing me to do. They are better off sticking with the breastmilk and water if anything else. Even the doctor told me at 6 months to start letting them have a glass of juice a day and I honestly don't see any good reason for it at all. It's just giving them a taste of sugary stuff early enough for them to get hooked on the idea young. I may as well have given them decaf sweet tea even though people think that's bad. It's really the same thing though, just cheaper.

Most people just don't drink juice the way they drink soda so I think it's a bit of a stretch to be honest, and there's more nutritional value to a glass of juice than an equal serving of soda. A lot of people I do know who drink soda will drink more than one 12 oz can a day of it. I know in the UK they don't use high fructose corn syrup, but processed cane sugar is still not great, and many sodas are high in sodium and contain caffeine which the article doesn't mention at all.

I'll stick to my 8 oz glass of juice (100% not from concentrate w/added calcium) in the morning, I think.

No offense to anyone who drinks juice without considering the caloric content of it, or who gives it to their children with like abandon, but anyone who drinks it ounce for ounce like they would any other beverage thinking it's entirely healthy and that the sugar content and calories don't count needs a reality check.

Just like vegetarians who subsist mostly on cheese pizza and pasta dishes (yes, I've known more than enough unhealthy vegetarians in my time), it takes a lot more consideration to eat a healthy and balanced diet and given a choice between a small glass of juice, or a can of soda in my diet, I'll take the juice!
