Question

Has anyone had a CVS test?

Hello all you lovely pregnant ladies..!

Haven't posted since the beginnings of my pregnancy (it's been a long journey so far..). But was hoping to find someone out there who has taken the CVS test and could tell me their experience of it. I'm 44 yrs old and currently 12 +3 weeks pregnant with my 3rd. This pregnancy was a complete surprise out of the blue but I was thrilled when I got over the shock! Taking into account my age and the fact that I have a recurrent miscarriage history (5 to date), I knew it wasn't going to be plain sailing. Well I made it past all the blood counts, scan hurdles and last week had my combined nuchal test. My nuchal looked brilliant - only 1mm gap; but then when my blood results went with it (my HCG was also excellent - 3 MOM when it needs to be above 1, but my PAPP-A was only .25 - you need a 1 really) this gave me a mathematical Downs risk factor of 1:5 - pretty pants really. I now think I want to know for sure asap and don't think I can wait for an amnio, but was wondering what a CVS was like as I'm a bit of a scaredy cat.. can anyone enlighten me?

I'm not sure, as I haven't known anyone who's had it. I hope everything works out for you though. The MW or doc should keep you pretty well informed, give them a call, I'm sure they wouldn't mind answering any questions you have. Have you thought about after the test?

Hi Ann-Marie
thanks for your reply. Love the picture, by the way! I should be able to speak the midwife counsellor tomorrow morning. You know how these things are - you get the call with the results Friday afternoon, take in as many facts as you can then spend the weekend worrying without being able to speak to them..

I decided that if the baby was Downs then I would opt for a termination. My boys are very lively (oldest marginally ADHD) and I think it wouldn't be fair on them to introduce a disabled child into the equation. This pregnancy wasn't planned but we saw it as a gift and if the CVS gives a bad result then so be it. It will be pretty tough but for us, the right thing to do.
