Upset and insane toothache- what do I do???

Ok so I should firstly point out that I haven't been to the dentist in about 2 years as I am completely petrified. I used to love going, then had a horrible experience with one dentist (it takes a lot to freeze me, he didn't believe me that I could feel the drilling so he stuck one of his wee metal pokey instruments in my tooth- I have NEVER felt pain like it!). So ever since then, it's been a battle to make myself go. Anyway, I noticed a little cavity in my tooth about 5 months ago but me being me, I ignored it and tried not to think about the fact that it would only get worse. So for the past 2 weeks I have been in serious pain with my tooth, and it all came to a head last night when I was nearly vomiting from the pain and also noticed a big lump about the size of a malteser in the gum above the same tooth- this is causing the whole left side of my face to be constantly throbbing in pain. So I woke up today and told myself to suck it up and phone the dentist. So I did, and they have told me that as I haven't been to them in over 2 years I have been de-registered and they aren't taking on any new patients at the minute, so I can't re-register. So I have just spent the morning phoning round dentists trying to find one that is taking on new patients. None of them are. I don't know what to do!!! I am in agony! Should I go to the hospital? I know the main hospital in Belfast has a school of dentistry but I don't know if they will be able to help me! I'm completely upsetting myself over it all. Anyone have any advice??

Hey i am so sorry that you are in pain. I know how you feel i hate the dentist too i am petrified of going but when you are pregnant you have to. The lump could be an abcess and you have to get it seen to. You should have a dentistry hospital and you should be able to call and get an emergency appointment with them if you are not with another dentist. Normally the school of dentistry is where you can get emergency treatment. Let me know how you get on xxx
