It IS safe and does not cause miscarriage. The story that was posted in first tri is really weird and honestly was probably just a weird coincidence. I have never in my life heard of that happening to anyone before. I have had tons of internals done and have never had one hurt before at all because they don't put it in very far and the wand is very thin.

It IS SAFE!

I had a m/c within an hour of a pap smear once... everyone has one in early pregnancy in the US though so while I could claim that caused my due to the timing, there are millions of other women who have had it done with no problem. It was just a coincidence!! Even rough sex doesn't cause m/c!!

If someone actually begins to hurt you doing an internal, just make them stop immediately. I read the post the first tri thread referred to and she said the woman hurt her VERY VERY badly which is REALLY not normal.

Also, the more I think about it, the more I doubt the story... I've never ever seen a hospital admit in writing that someone on their staff screwed up like that unless there was no possible other way out because it opens them up completely to a really bad lawsuit.

One more thing...

don't let them ruin the experience for you please! Your scan is something to be excited about. You get to see your baby!! My old doctor did one at every single visit, starting with internals early on, then externals after 12 weeks. How far along are you by the way? After 12 weeks they usually do an external scan over the tummy.

I've never head of scans being dangerous internal or external. When I was about 8 weeks pregnant I had an external scan all I needed was a full bladder. Please, don't be afraid of having a scan, most people wish they were able to have an early scan and see their baby. Also, if you have any questions you should contact your doctor/midwife. They should also ease your worries. Best of luck hun!!!

I agree with Honeygrl

internal scans are completely safe

If anyone went on to have a miscarriage after having an internal scan they were obviously going to miscarry already and it wouldnt have made any difference whether or not they had that scan... they'd still have miscarried even if they hadnt had it

Try not to worry xx

I had an internal scan at 6 weeks and all was and is fine - I havent seen the thread in first tri but please try not to worry. The probe itself is teeny and not even uncomfortable let alone painful

I wouldn't worry if I was you - internal scans are safe.

I had one at 4 weeks, 6 weeks, 8 weeks, 10 weeks, 12 weeks (so many scans because I miscarried 3 months beforehand and they wanted to keep an idea on this pregnancy) and am now only getting external scans.

Try not to worry about it

I've had three internal scans done by two different people and they didn't hurt at all. xx
