I never even thought about this and we had 2 guinea pigs (now sadly only one). BCJ is for tuberculosis and I don't think hamsters can carry that. I found this http://www.justanswer.com/questions/...iseases-humans I am not sure if you could maybe get an infection/ maybe tetnus if it bit you but I don't think it's very likely. I think you and your hammy will be fine

you should be fine, just wash your hands really well after touching anything to do with it. also i wouldnt let it run around as it would let wee out everywhere which might carry some diseases x

I was wondering if like cat wee, hamster wee was unsafe. We have two dwarf hamsters that desperately need cleaning. Think I'll get DH to do it! ;-)

Found this for you...

Should pregnant women be concerned about owning a hamster or other rodent?

Although the risk of LCMV infection from pet rodents is generally low. However, pregnant women should be aware of the risks associated with acquiring LCMV infection during pregnancy. Some of the following precautions can be taken to reduce even further the risk of acquiring LCMV infection during pregnancy:

* Pregnant women should avoid contact with wild rodents. If you have a household rodent infestation, it should be addressed promptly by a professional pest control company or another member of the household.
* Keep your pet rodent in a separate part of the home and ask another family member or friend to clean the cage and care for the pet. Avoid prolonged stays in the room where the rodent resides.

It came from http://www.cdc.gov/HEALTHYPETS/lcmv_rodents.htm

That site also has more information on what LCMV infection is. I had never heard of it before reading that.

Well, it does say that the risk is very low... most likely if you were going to have issues with it, you would've had them already if you've had the hamster for a while. I would just make OH do the cleaning and make sure hands are washed well after handling. I personally think it's silly for us to all practically live in a plastic bubble.

With my son, I had to change the cat litter box for 3 cats myself through the whole pregnancy and nothing bad happened. My ex refused to do it no matter what the possible consequences were so I just made sure I used gloves and washed up well afterward. My doctor gave him hell over it so he just quit going to the doctor with me and insisted it was no big deal and if I didn't want to do it I could give away the cats.
