Dummies are bad for speech development!!?

This is what i found on Sky News this morning
http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/Wor...s_New_Research

Im taking this with a pinch of salt as ive sucked my thumb for 25 years (still do sometimes ) and my speech always has been and still is fine.

Intresting tho...

What a load of rubbish!! I sucked a dummy for seven years (and had one on each finger lol) and my speech is fine!! I would however be vigilant as my brother when he was a toddler choked on the handle of his, luckily he was ok thanks to moi but still gotta keep an eye out!x

I think most babies and children have sucked dummies or their thumb and obviously there will be some children who do develop speech problems but come on, how can this be down to having a dummy.?
BF's sister used to suck all her fingers at once when she was a littun and she is fine lol

i read a very similar thing this morning in a cruddy tabloid but the headline was thumb sucking

either way both my kids had dummies until 4ish and my eldest then started to thumb suck, and still does at 8 so not sure what i could have done differently there lol - my 6 year old just sucks his t shirt - gross i know and most nights i have to change his pj top before he goes to sleep as he will lie in bed and suck it

oh and neither have speech probs

I think that when the child starts talking the dummy can have an effect on developing speech if its constantly in their mouth. You see some kids even talk with their dummies in their mouths. The other thing is that it can affect your teeth which is why they make them in different sizes for different ages to fit the mouth. So on the whole I think its rubbish that it would really affect your child drastically but I think its not good for older children to have a dummy in all the time.

I asked my HV about it and she said dummys should be banned as they interfere with so much of a babies development (latching onto mum/eating solids/teething/talking) and I actually agree to some point. My DD is a week younger than one of my best friends DD and my daughter started to gurgle/babble AND talk a whole lot quicker than her BFs as she was constantly sucking on the dummy. I think a dummy at night or occasionally is fine and its fine for a little bubba but when the get to the babbling/talking stage it should be limited. That's just my opinion and each to their own.

I kind of see both points. Yeah some toddlers talking with it in their mouth all the time, but in the long term I really think speech will always be fine. So use a dummy if you want to!

I was told by many people that if you use dummies, it prevents thumb sucking. I was suprised, because I thought it would encourage thumb sucking.

What's your opinions??????
