breast cancer while pregnant

I am 19 weeks pregnant and just found out on Wednesday that the lumps in my right breast that I thought were benign are actually breast cancer. As I'm pregnant, they obviously could not perform a full body scan to see if the cancer had spread. They did bloodwork, a liver ultrasound, chest xray and a mammogram and ultrasound on the left breast. Nothing appeared to be in the left breast and my chest xray was normal and the liver ulrasound and bloodwork looked fine. I have to have a non-contract MRI of the liver just to confirm. The doctor seems to think that it may have spread to my lymph nodes but am awaiting the pathology. Given the size and locations of the tumors, I will have to have a mastectomy but they are going to wait until after I deliver as it appears that they will not monitor the baby during surgery if the baby is under 22 weeks, They have recommended chemo for 12-16 weeks (4-6 treatments) followed by surgery and chemo after delivery. I have been told that the chemo drugs I would receive prior to delivery are shown to be "safe" to baby and the the risks are far outweighed by the benefit to me. The doctor has said that it is curable and I amtrying very hard to keep a positive mental attitude.

I am going tomorrow for a second opinion at the Dana Farber in Boston. For my own piece of mind I need to confirm that the proposed treatment plan is in my best interest and the best interest of the baby.

It is very overwhelming and a little disheartening as DH and I have been trying to conceive for 5 years, went through all the infertility treatments, and then manage to get pregnant on our own and then I get diagnosed with breast cancer. I have to wonder why the world has to be so cruel at times.

Has anyone here been through this or know someone who has?

Hi, I'm really terribly sorry to read what you are going through. I cannot imagine how stressful this must be.

Not too long ago a lady came on here with the same problem, she started a little campaign to meet other women who had been through this, to get support, find out their experiences and any information really because it's such a specific issue and support seems hard to find. Her blog is here: http://sta.rtup.biz/profiles/blogs/d...-help-pregnant and even if you cannot contact her, in the comments posted below her blog there are women who you could get in touch with maybe who could shine a bit of positivity onto things?

I wish you every luck in fighting this xxx
