Freak out. OH is gonna be jobless! (long)

Ok, my OH has worked for the same company for 10 years and in a management position for almost 2. He has never gotten anything but an "exceeds" evaluation score. He is more than willing to go in on his day off and fix problems and has done so several times, and has only called in sick 3 times in the last two years.

Well, evidently NONE of this matters to the company. Evidently someone overheard a conversation they thought was inappropriate and went to upper management about it. Today, he was called into the office and told he was being demoted and given a d-day (decision day, kind of a last shot before getting fired) because of his comments. The really shitty part? They won't tell him the topic of the conversation or what he supposedly said. So he put in his two weeks notice. I realize it was a bit of a rash decision, but I fully support and respect it. If that's all the respect that he is given after 10 years of service to the same company, it is obviously not worth it.

So now I'm freaking out a bit. He has already put in applications at two places and is taking his resume to another tomorrow, but still! This is a tough economy to find a job in... We have always been a two income family and we don't have a lot to fall back on. Ok, I'm done. I just had to vent.

That's tough, but I totally understand why he did that. My OH got let go back in January over bullshit office politics. Things had already started to get bad where he worked to the point we had already discussed him quitting, so when he was let go we were at least a little prepared to deal with it. Money's tight, but we manage on just my salary and he's looking for part time evening jobs, so when the baby is born we won't have to pay for child care. Even if he doesn't find a job we'll still find a way to make things work.
Good luck! I hope he finds a job soon, so you don't need to worry.

oh gosh hun I am sorry. That's just ridiculous, they should have given him a chance to explain. I don't get it. He shouldn't have put his two weeks notice. It would have been an unlawful termination.
I realize it's super stressful for you especially right now and especially in this economy but who knows maybe he will find something better. Several girls here including myself lost our jobs recently and obviously that far along nobody would hire us. At least he's not showing. Don't freak out, approach methodically. Call friends, family if they know somebody who knows somebody, call all recruiters in the area, apply directly on sites (I got most calls if I applied directly to the company instead of going through career builder and other job services). Good luck!!!

OMG. This exact thing happened to my OH last October. In our case the "inappropriate conversation" was on the phone. They told him he was being suspended for "wire tapping" and they confiscated his phone. Well, they obviously couldn't find anything and they let him go for being inappropriate.

He had been with his company as a manager for 8 years and never got one bad review. Since then they have fired 3 other managers for similar things. The thought is they are trying to "weed out" those managers that don't follow corporate's vision.

So weird to hear someone else has experienced this. Sorry for you and your OH!

Aw sorry to hear that..that really sucks in an economy like this, but why'd he put in his two weeks notice? Now he can't go against them for wrongful termination..nore can he get unemployement if godforbid he doesn't find a job quickly..hope everything works out for you guys..wish you the best of luck

The problem with claiming wrongful termination is that I work at the same store. It is almost guaranteed that if he makes a stink, I will be fired too, that's just how it works. He went ahead and is giving 2 weeks because once there is one issue at the store, they WILL find a way to terminate you. They didn't terminate him over this because I think they know they can't. But if he "screws up" at any point after this, even if he comes in a couple minutes late, they can terminate him and make it look legal. I personally think that someone else wanted his position and they needed to find a way to open it up.

"At least he's not showing" made me almost fall over laughing!
