Right u know the scan to do to detect abnormalities, risk of downs etc?
I was reading my pregnancy book & they showed a scan pic of low risk pregnancy & 1 of high risk.
The picture annotated that they look for the amount of fluid behind the babys neck...
Now if u look at your normal 12 week scan pic is this the same thing? I mean can u look at this & see how much fluid there is??
Or am I barking up the wrong tree
I asked for one of these at my 22 wk scan because my triple test results went missing but the lady told me I couldn't have one then. Im not sure whether they need a different type of doctor to do it or if they need a different scanning machine though.
I think in normal circumstances they only refer you for one if your triple test results have shown a high risk? Not sure for definate though.
I had the Nuchal Fold scan for Downs Syndrome. I guess you might be able to get an idea from your scan pics if the baby is in exactly the right position, but it would have to be a scan from between 11wks and 14wks. In my scan below, the sonographer pointed out the Nuchal Fold as the long thin white line at the back of the neck (Baby is on back facing up, with head to left of pic). The amount of dark space in between is the fluid. As you might be able to see, mine was very small at 1.2 and with my blood test and age combined the babies chance of having Downs Syndrome is 1:16,400.
I'm sure if there was an abnormally large amount of fluid there at your normal scan, they would have investigated!
To be honest with you I would not attempt it. I think it's better to leave that to the health care professionals. Like Becky said if they had seen an abnormality I really think they would have investigated it.
I had the complete genetic testing done which included NT scan and 2 blood tests. My baby's NT was 1.6 at 12 weeks.
Combined with blood test results we received a chance of 1:32 000 of having a DS baby. The test also cleared us of all other neural tube defects.
