Confused by specialist appointment :(

Hello all,

Sorry, not been about for a few days, as been really busy at work
I was just wondering if any of you ladies could help....as I'm confused
I had my first consultant appointment on Weds. Now....I was referred to the obstetrician by my MW as it took us 5 years to conceive and I was concerned this may have an affect on my pregnancy. (PCOS both sides, hormone levels all over the place )
Anyhoo, when I first arrived at the hospital, I saw a lovely MW who again let me hear the baby's heartbeat, and had a chat with me. She was lovely and really reassuring. I had taken a friend with me, as OH was at work all day, and she was talking to my friend too, explaining things, she also tested my urine to check all ok and she explained that they would like me to have a gestational diabetes test at 24 weeks, as PCOS is a cause of this.
Then we had to go in to see the specialist. Well....when my friend and I got in there, there were two doctors in there, neither were the specialist I had been told I was probably going to see, but that was fine, as my letter said it may be someone else. Then they started talking about my weight and asking if I wanted to be referred to a dietician. I was a little confused and said that I thought I was there because of my PCOS?? Then they said 'no, you're here because your BMI is 34'. Well, I was surprised. No one had mentioned anything to me prior to this. My MW had said it was to do with my PCOS and I thought the 'cut off' for BMI was 35, but they said it was 30.
They then said that I have an increased risk of clotting during labour and I will be having an extra growth scan at 34 weeks.
Now, I know I'm not small, but I had lost 3.5 stone before BFP and am shocked that nobody prior to the consultant thought to mention my weight being an issue??
Has anybody else had this??

Your midwife sounds really nice. Maybe she was being so nice and polite that she kinda didn't say about your weight as the reason and didn't make it clear because she didn't wanna upset you.

My MW is lovely, but it seems strange to not mention it??
I would've thought that they need to tell you straight??

I have PCOS and will be having the GTT, but not because of the PCOS. I have a family history of diabetes so they're testing me at 28 weeks. PCOS isn't a risk factor for GD anymore than it is a risk for type 2 diabetes in every day life, so long as you're a good weight, it's very unlikely. However, since you are overweight and have PCOS I assume that both of these factors combined are the reasoning behind your higher risk.

The midwife should have said something to you, if only to say that it was standard procedure for women with a BMI over 30, as it is their job to explain things to you and help you to understand the things that might wash over you when specialists get involved.

The increased risk of clotting applies to anyone who is overweight, they're just saying that to you as a possibility (a tiny tiny possibility) not as a likelihood. I don't really see the need for a growth scan if you don't have GD and your fundal height measurements are OK. They sound like they're jumping the gun a bit to me.

Try to relax, you'll be fine and the odds are that you wont have GD at all. Enjoy the extra scan though! x

Yes, the specialist did say 'PCOS and being overweight can go hand in hand' so I guess that's where they are coming from. I just felt a bit hurt/shocked I guess, and also embarrassed that my friend was there.
I am pleased I am having an extra scan though

I think I might ring my MW and just ask? It's just horrible, because I have always fought with my weight and worked so hard on my diet, then my reward seemed to be finally getting a BFP and then all this again. Oh well, as long as I don't harm bubba xxxx

I wonder if there was a bit of assuming going on on your midwife's part PCOS is known to cause trouble with weight gain and difficulty keeping weight down, so she may just have assumed that you would equate PCOS and weight issues?
