at 20 week scan they will look for abnormalities which does include typical Downs reference points. If there is a hint of a problem they will tell you.
Dont get worked up about Downs though. Firstly its not that common, secondly a Downs child isnt the end of the world.

Some places don't do the nuchal scan for downs, where I live doesn't. I was told by my GP if I wanted it I would have to pay for it to be done privately. I would have thought you should have been offered the triple (blood) test at about 15/16 weeks though - no?

Oh, and I decided not to bother with either cos they would only stress me out if they came back high risk. I don't feel a downs baby would be the end of the world either.

Hi where I live they do not do the nuchel fold scan so they do bloods at 16 weeks instead. Just had mine yesterday so you would be the right time as well. I had to make my own appointment with the midwife they did not send me one. The 20 week scan looks for soft markers for downs but it is not the main reason for the scan as bloods are done earlier. Go and phone your midwife now like I did.
Good luck.

hi ya - I had a detailed scan yesterday and they checked for nasal bones and other soft markers as anothesquish said. Did you not have blodd tests at 16 weeks?

I'm sorry you're hospital messed you around with your booking and first scan if it were at 12 weeks they may well have done it but NT can only be done from 11-13 and as admin screwed up your scan so you were only 9 weeks i think they should offer you the quadruple test that tests for that and sb! i would ask if it were me and i'd been messed around!

Yes, not a lot of places offer the nuchal test. I was offered and had the bloods done at 15wks for downs/spina bifida.

They do look for any abnormalities at the 20wk scan. Remember if they dont find anything or if your bloods come as really low risk it doesnt guarantee anything.

If they saw anything you would know all about it!

I would have been really pi**ed off if I wasnt offered the blood tests tho - meaning if the midwife forgot -obviously if your NHS dont do it then theres not much you can do. x

Hi

I had my booking in appointment too late to have the tests done, part my fault for delaying but mainly the doctors for screwing my appointment dates up.

I went for my 20 week scan and she checked for indicators and everything was fine so try not to worry and just enjoy seeing your LO

x
