High Blood Pressure?

Morning everyone

Can you tell me what constitutes high blood pressure and what the signs of it are physically?

Is stress likely to bring it on?

Thanks

xx

I was told I had high blood pressure yesterday at my 16 week appointment where it measured 140/85. As a one off reading this would not nessecarily be considered high, but when compared with my booking bp of 110/55 it is a lot higher.

I was very ill with more horrible diarrhoea before the appointment so am I 99% certain it was just the stress of the morning that made it high.

High blood pressure is pregnancy is in part relative to previous readings. Generally a bottom reading above 85 could be considered high and a top reading above 135 could be considered high.....but it will depend on what you reading was at booking.

Stress can definitely cause blood pressure to be raised.

by the way the risk of pre-eclamsia (high blood pressure in pregnancy) can be lowered by giving the father of the baby regular "oral- pleasure". A fact OH reminds me of on a regular basis.

See half way down the wikipedia page.

I suggest not informing your OH of this fact as he will most likely become insistent on helping you reduce your risk.

...and you need to swallow

I had it done at work - as we have a machine - it was 143/89. The midwife mentioned last time i went it was very high then re did it and it was ok the second time. i must check my notes to see what it has been up until now!

Always ignore electronic machines over manual BP pumps... the results are often wildly inaccurate.

i sufferred from high bp in my last pregnancy and it wasn't nice!

it started getting high at around 27 weeks and i was put on tablets that made me so tired and gain tons of weight. they didn't help much tbh either.

high bp can cause growth problems in babies (like what happened to my baby - he was just over 5ibs) and needs to be monitored very carefully.

stress wont help, neither woud a poor diet, lack of exercise etc.

good luck hun, i hope it is just a one off for you.

Yeah, just ignore it. My BP is usually perfect (around 90/60) and I went for a health check up when I moved to my new doctor's surgery not too long ago and the HCA took it with an electronic monitor and it was 120/85 which is a massive leap, so I asked for it to be done again, manually and... 60/90.

My mother is a MW and hates the electronic monitors, they refuse to use them and most doctors will refuse them too. If you ever have one, ask for it to be done manually for a more accurate reading.
