Statutory Mat pay - UK ladies?

Hey all

I received my acknolwedgement letter from work in response to the form I filled in to say my mat leave date and all that.

Anyway it says statutory maternity pay is £117 - is this right, I was sure it was around £120 now - don't want to get ripped off! Is there different levels?

Thanks

hey i found this for you x

How much SMP do you get
If you qualify for SMP, it is paid:

for the first six weeks at 90 per cent of your average gross weekly earnings with no upper limit
for the remaining 33 weeks at the lower of either the standard rate of £123.06, or 90 per cent of your average gross weekly earnings
Please read ‘Statutory Maternity Pay – how it is worked out’ for more information

from direct.gov website

Thanks for that. Hoping it is just a typo on the letter!

That is great - thanks.

Oh my - how exactly am I meant ot manage when my wages drop from 90% of £350 a week to £120??? And because I have a mortgage I won't get housing benefit regardless of the fact I won't be able to pay it!!! I am scared now! £480 a month won't even cover my mortgage and bills which including council tax is £750 a month!! It seems the system is set up to make you run back to work as fast as possible but I'm on my own so don't have anyone to take over looking after the baby while I go back to being a wage slave. Unbelievable.

It is going to be hard. Remember that the blooming £123 is also taxable, I think it comes to about £100 one all the tax and NI is off.

However, you will also get child benefit at £20 a week and then there is child tax credits and working tax credits - there is lots of info on the web.

Also, a lot of mortgage companies will offer a maternity holiday - you can stop paying for about 6 months - check this out with them.

I can't recommend the following website enough - moneysavingexpert.com - especially the Forums for advice on this sort of stuff.

x

HI Maybebaby,

SMP until 5th April 2010 is £123.06. However if your weekly pay at 90% is lower than the statutory rate you will be paid the lower amount.

With regard to Tax (on a tax code of 647L) you pay tax on earnings over £124.61 per week.

On NI you pay 11% on earnings over £110.

Thanks for this info - I do earn over that amount, looking at it I think they have put the 2008 figure instead of the one for this year.

I am confused now about the tax though - I thought it was worked that you pay tax on all earnings over £6470, I will earn over this cause I am taking 9 months mat leave. I think I need to look into it!

At least you going to get it, my company have just screwed one pregnant girl out of hers and now are trying to do the same to me.
My boss has reduced my hours claiming they have to for safety reasons, he thinks im too stupid to know that anything below 16 hours and they dont have to pay me smp.

I am lucky with my company. I get 6 months full pay then 15 weeks SMP.

You will still accrue your holidays whilst you are on maternity leave so worth taking them at the end to enable you more time off and get paid for it.

Hi

That is totally illegal, I would look into getting it sorted now before you get any further down the line.
