Holiday medicines etc

Hi all,

I'm going to Portugal next week & I checked through my medicines etc last night (paracetamol, squits tablets etc) to see which were ok to take when pregnant & I took 3 with me to show the midwife today that I wasn't sure of. One was ok, but she said I couldn't have Piriton syrup (for prickly heat) or Immodium tablets (for the squits) if they're not prescribed by the doctor.

Has anyone had the same problem? Do you know of any alternatives that I can have instead? (I'm a complete wimp & have trouble taking 'proper' tablets though )

Thanks in advance,

Lynz xx

I went away to Tenerife when 14 weeks pg and was worried about being ill especially upset stomachs due to dodgy food. I didn't take anything (aside from stuff for the children) and was just really careful where I ate, drank only the bottled water, including brushing my teeth. I did have drinks with ice and carried a little bottle of the antispetic hand wash and used that it ate anything while we were out and about.

This was probably the first holiday, I didn't get a bout of the runs, which surprised me. Your right you shouldn't take any anti diarrhoea tablets, but make sure you drink plenty and try and eat foods high in carbs. You can take Dioralyte to rehydrate yourself, but again I would just run this by your midwife to make sure it is something you can take.

I am sure you will be fine, and have a lovely holiday. x

I went twice to Mexico during this summer. And i didn't take any medication with me, trying to take as much care as possible during the trip. I did get a bit of an upset stomach, but nothing bad or worrying in spite of being careful.

As Velvetina suggests, drink lots of water and make sure you eat well and in places that appear hygenic. Don't take any chance (e.g. avoid food/sauces that have been standing for a while, always make sure things are well cooked, and that the ingredients do not include anything you need to avoid).

Good luck and enjoy your holidays, it is possible in spite of the care you need to have.

I'm signed off work sick with diarrhoea for past 2.5 weeks and have seen the doctor 3 times and am still not allowed immodium. The medical centre appear to have lost my poo sample (i so hope they find it and i don't have to do another)so I don't know if they will let me start taking immodium if it comes back without any nasty. I guess the main reason immodium isn't allowed is to make sure any nasties don't stay in the body.

I have, however been taking piriton daily since BFP, but that is prescribed. Prior to pregnancy I took certerizine and was swapped when I saw doctor after getting BFP.

I haven't got any experience with alternatives or travel abroad when pregnant.

Thanks for all your help.....we're staying in a villa so we'll be self catering most of the time. I'll take extra care when eating out & try to stick to veggie stuff that looks fresh!

I just wanted to take stuff to be on the safe side but I'll hopefully not need it (fingers crossed!).

Thanks again xxx
