Seeing a consultant

Well you may remember a few days ago I posted because I was worried about the results of my 20 week scan, when they found an echogenic focus in my babys heart.

I went to see my doctor this morning who was great. She didn't understand what it was but didn't know why why I hadn't been given a follow up appointment and phoned the hospital for me who have given me an appointment on Wednesday to see a consultant.

I'm a little nervous and actually feel a bit like I'm wasting their time but hopefully I will feel a bit better afterwards. I know that I don't want an amnio because I don't want to risk losing my baby so I won't know for sure either way whether he had Downs Syndrome till he's born but I'd like to know just how much my risk has been increased.

I'm surprised they never gave you a follow up appointment. At least you've got one now. Hopefully they'll arrange a later scan when your further on.

Hi anita665, I just wanted to say goodluck. I had the amnio done 2weeks ago and there is only a 0.5%-1% a miscarrys occur which is really small and it was definately worth it to stop the worrying which you will always have through pregnancy if you don't. They are so good at the procedure these days that there is hardly and risk. It was over in like 5 minutes and then they rescan you for the babies heartbeat and show you that you won't miscarry so you don't have to worry after.
I totally understand in you not wanting to have it done, i was put on the spot as the found a bladder blockage on my scan and 10minutes later I was having the amnio. So I didn't really have a lot of time to consider it.
But don't rule it out until you have spoken to the consultant, that is unless you have had a previous bad experience with amnio or something. Sorry this isn't meant to be rude.
I know what the worries like, let us know after the consultant what was said. Good luck xxxxx

Good luck with your appointment. I was suprised they never gave you a follow up to be honest, but at least now the positive thing is youve got the opportunity to ask whatever questions you have and someone who is a specialist will be able to answer them for you.

I really hope all goes well hun

Well after talking to OH today I might be changing my mind about having an amnio if they will let me.

Apparently the chances of my baby actually having Downs Syndrome are really small. Some hospitals don't even tell you if they see an echogenic foci because they're so unsure of the link to downs unless they find another soft marker. I wish mine hadn't told me!

Even so I can't help but worry now it has been suggested to me and most medical info suggest the chance could be 1% which is about equal to that of having an amniocentesis done. If this is what the consultant confirms to me tomorrow, I will definatly want the test.

I'm so nervous though. Baby is kicking like crazy as if he's telling me not to. I would feel so terrible if something went wrong and my baby was actually healthy but the NHS website was quite reasuring about the procedure.
