downs question

aside from the test telling you your risk ( which i know its a blood test)
is there no other indication for this condition throughout pregnancy?

ie: if u dont do the blood test u wont know til the baby is born?

In an amniocentesis they draw off some amniotic fluid from around the baby and use this to check chromosones. Is it the nuchal fold at the back of the neck that they check for on ultrasound . Know some ladies have further tests, not to necessarily terminate pregnancy but to get the results so that they have time to find out about conditions and to get used to idea and prepare themselves

They check the brain on the 20wk scan and the spine.. There's usually some weird lining on one of them if the baby has downs. Not always though. I think the chance of picking up downs on the scan is 40% if they have it but I'm not 100% sure

You can have the amniocentesis or CVS, which can determine if your LO has downs, not all abnormalities can be picked up via ultrasound, and the blood tests are only a percentage, I had the triple test at 16weeks and my results came back as a low risk at 1 in 1900.

here in canada, they do a test called IPS (integrated prenatal screening) which consists of 2 blood tests and a nuchal translucency ultrasound.
the nuchal thickness ultrasound is said to account for 70% of diagnoses for down's, while the blood tests give you the rest.
i got 1 in 32 000 as a result.

I don't think it's that often they can tell you for certain by the scan alone but they pick up markers (I think there are 15 possible Downs Syndrome markers in total) which can be enything from a dot in the heart which was found on mine to a problem with the nose or problems with other organs. The more markers find the higher your risk and if they think you're at risk they normally send you for more tests like the amnio which carries a tiny risk of miscarriage.
