Restless Leg Syndrome

I've heard that this can be quite common in pregnany, and think I have it?

Was out all day yesterday at a family festival-y type thing. Did some walking around but nothing major, I thought. Legs last night when I got home were going bucko and I couldn't settle for hours :/

TOdya, I'm just devoid of all energy. Took all my energy to even lift my hand earlier :/ Have had a bit of a nap and feel slightly better but still can't move. Its werid.

I googled RLS and its linked to iron, so must start taking my iron tablets again..have been very lazy all week at it.

I had a really difficult time with RLS when I was pregnant with my last. It would start while i was sleeping and was very uncomfortable.. I had a very difficult time getting any sleep when it would flare up...mostly in my third trimester. I know I have had iron defficiencies on and off since I was about 5 and with my last two pregnancies. About 20% of pregnant woman experience Restless leg syndrome. Maybe take an iron supplement or increase your intake in your diet. Hope you feel better hun.

Make sure you check your iron levels before deciding to take a supplement. Too much iron can be harmful to you and baby. RLS is connected to a lot more than just iron.

Make sure you cut out your caffeine in the later hours of the day (I usually suggest not caffeine, including tea, after about 5 or 6 in the evening).
Check your iron level for anemia. If you are not anemic then an iron supplement will not help your RLS.
Two other deficiencies that contribute to RLS are magnesium and potassium. These can not be tested for as easily as iron. Try eating more bananas. If that doesn't work after a week or two then try eating more magnesium-rich foods.
If none of that works then your RLS is not caused be a deficiency and is more likely neurological... which can't be treated until after baby is born.

Also try stretching your legs before bed, try hot or cold compresses (if one doesn't work, try the other), try sleeping with socks on (compression socks, if you have them). You can also soak your legs in warm water with a couple of cups of epsom salts and have someone massage your legs and feet thoroughly before bed.

I've been dealing with RLS for a few years before getting pregnant. Now, it's even worse. I've found that mine is caused by a magnesium deficiency so I take 500mg of magnesium every night before bed. It took a couple of weeks to kick in (with one week being at 250mg instead of 500mg) but now that it has I've been sleeping SOOOO much better. If things get completely unbearable, I have some preggo-safe muscle relaxers that I can take but I try not to do that unless there's no other way for me to sleep.

Cheers - thanks for the advice. I will see tongiht if it comes back. Such a wierd sensation to have!

My doctors automatically issued me with a prescription for iron tablets at my 12 week booking scan, but I wasn't to start taking them till 18 weeks. I just assumed that every pregnant woman was given iron tablets, but if its harmful if i don't need them, then I might ask my doctor whether I do or do not need to take them..

They usually check us over here before just giving out extra supplements. We get prenatal vitamins automatically but not usually ones with extra iron unless we have a history of anemia.... which I do not.

I have this too and have had it on and off for a long time before getting pregnant. Like Bam I found that magnesium has been the most helpful thing in treating this, although I would check before taking this when pregnant. I find mine is much worse when I am tired in the evenings, and luckily sleeping seems to help and it doesn't keep me awake. It's a weird feeling though, like your legs are sort of agitated all the time.

I have this too on and off. Some nights I lay there desperately tired but my legs have other ideas and want to do some sort of Michael Flatley Lord of the Dance number !

It's very irritating but it's not every night (thankfully). I feel for you if you're getting it every night - it must be driving you mad!

Being overly tired maybe your culprit. If I make a regular habit of napping during the day then I have less severe kickiness (along with taking my magnesium).
