Big Babies - Small Mothers

I'm a bit concerned that my midwife thinks I'm likely to have a big baby.

At my first scan I was put 2 days ahead of my EDD by my LMP, then at my next scan about 2 or 3 weeks later my DD was put 2 days ahead of that.

Since then I was wondering why my uterus was a little bigger than average. At 20 weeks, when it should be at your belly button, mine was an inch or 2 above it.

Then at my 20 week scan they said baby was growing within the normal range but right at the top of it. The midwife said possibly between 8 & 10lbs at birth or possibly more. This really scared me as I'm a petit size 8 normally.

I was only 7lb 2 and his dad was 8lb something. His dads brother was over 8lbs too but his sister and other brother were around the 7lb mark. OMG how will he ever come out. I will never be the same down there again!

Look, women have had some HUGE babies, im sure you will cope fine! Try not to worry too much, a lot of midwives seem to say "big baby" then people have 6-7lb babies! Everyone told me I must be having a big baby, but I must have had a lot of fluid as Bethanie was only 7lbs.

It will be fine.

EDIT - Also, just forgot to add.. there is no link between pelvic size and height i've heard. Some petite women have a bigger pelvis than tall women.. don't worry.

I dont think family has anything to do with it really... but I dont know.

You might still have a small baby, it might just be growing really quickly now and it might slow down towards the end, you never know.

The hospitals will have ways of dealing with big babies anyway so Im sure you'll be fine

I can understand why you're worried though! Both me and my OH were over 9lbs when we were born and its terrifying me! haha

Your body will handle it because it was built to do so. I read a story last night of a women who had 3 big babies. THe first 2 were in the hospital with C-sections, and her last was at home, and was the biggest of them all. And she didn't tear at all. Her babies were well over 10 lbs.

Try not to worry. My sil had her first baby weighing in at 11lbs and my sil is only just 5ft. She has had smaller babies since and said they were harder to deliver! Midwives don't always guess correctly.

Well, I am 5"2 a very petite size 8 to 10 and Zach (my first son) was 9lb 3oz born. I did have an episiotomy and an epidural but I have to say it didn't hurt as much as I thought it would and he fared much better because he was a bigger baby.

My next baby is due in July this year and he or she is likely to be bigger. I am not worried though, trust the hospital judgment and if you are worried at any time tell your midwife. I am glad that I managed to have Zach naturally, the episiotomy wasn't as unpleasant as I thought either.

So don't worry hun, I'm sure that you'll be fine. I lived to tell the tale
