Update from my Doctor about Swine Flu vaccines...

Hey ladies, you all know how much I hate making a topic about the swine flu but this is information I got straight from my doctor yesterday.

I asked him how he felt about the vaccine and the fact that it has not been clinically tested. His response was:

Doctor: "I don't like that it hasn't been tested. But I don't think it will cause issues."

Me: "Ok, should I take it then?"

Doctor: "Well honestly I am pretty sure that it will not be out by the time you give birth. "

LOL

He further continued that it's still so far back in development and it takes a good amount of time for drug companies to manufacture it, that it's very unlikey that us girls will have a chance to receive it anyways.

So really we shouldn't agonize about having to make the decision to take it or not.

The vaccine wont be out until at least the end of the year as it has to be run through clinical trials first. What I would say to anybody is, regardless of how well the clinical trials go... as a pregnant woman, pioneering an injection isn't a decision that should be taken lightly as we cannot know the consequences on the child 5, 10 or however many years down the line.

It's a personal decision and one that should be made with an informed and educated opinion. Since a lot of people on here know very little about H1N1, I'd suggest a bit of research before making any decisions whatsoever.

Oh I agree. I will not be having the vaccine even if it came out tomorrow. My Doc. seemed to assure me that all I really needed was to take normal precautions and take Tylenol to keep any possible fevers down.

Thanks for the info! I'd actually been debating over this since the announcement came out that all pregnant women were urged to get it. I haven't had a flu shot at all in nearly 20 years and in that time I haven't had the flu at all. The way I look at it, you can either not get the shot, practice sensible hygiene and possibly not get the flu (or H1N1, in this case) or you can get the shot and have a higher chance of getting the flu (since, a lot of the time, the vaccination causes people to get sick anyway).

My mom was pushing for me to get it but I still hadn't decided... as for whether or not I get it after the baby gets here, I don't know. I suppose I'll have a chat with the doctor when that time comes. Personally, I'm not afraid of H1N1 (ugh, I hate the term "swine flu". It's not the same strain) but I'm not so sure when it comes to the health and safety of the baby.

Thanks Kittee - I agree with you both, I'd rather stick hot pokers in my bottom than take this drug. (I've had the piggy flu anyway so not an issue for me anyway). Its pure madness the way this has been blown out of all proportion.

I love my intelligent girls on here. to you both.

Your doctor is probably right about the vaccine. I think the swine flu thing is way out of proportion anyway.

My mum saw a report on the news, they did tests on loads of ppl in Stockport who reportedly had the swine flu - had taken tamiflu after calling helpline etc....

When they actually tested them only 1 IN 10 ppl actually had it! So if the governments numbers for the entire country are anything to go by - only about 1/10th of those people ACTUALLY have it. (I tried to look for a report to back this up but can't find it on the internet)

Numbers to think about

I'd already decided that I wouldn't have a vaccine even if it did come out before my baby was due to arrive. I've not taken my hayfever tablets all summer (and suffered) because they haven't been tested for pregnancy, should be ok but no-one can really say.

Let's hope it's all a lot of fuss about something that isn't going to last that long anyway.
(I don't mean that to sound horrible to anyone who has had it by the way, I just hope it's going to be short lived)

Well, I don't know if it helps anyone to know that even the "normal flu" vaccine hasn't made any impact whatsoever on the number of cases each year. Take away from that what you will but it's enough to make most people a little skeptical.
