Interesting thread, I'm in a similar position to Mariposa, but my husband works so I get normal jobseekers, not income based so I assumed I wouldn't get it.
Reading this is might be worth at least asking next time I go to the job centre.

Thanks ladies.

JayDee, i've been looking this up all morning as wanted to check I'd be eligable. If your on Job Seekers, you'll either be on Contribution based (which means you've paid your NI while working previously and you get a higher amount of JSA)

or Income based Job seekers is what they call the normal job seekers. therefore I think you'll be eligable......at least there's no harm in trying!

Thanks - I think I'm contribution based though, as they didn't ask anything about what money we had in the bank etc

Like you say though, worth a try, thanks x

I've read all this but somehow a girl I work with managed to claim it, she was working fulltime and her OH is self employed as a painter and decorator so they aren't short of money! I'll have to ask x

Hiya

I called the actual community grant people that deal with the surestart maternity grant yesterday

my query was regarding qualifying because of tax credit

I had read the info on the form that said it need to be 1095 in the tax year 08/09, my son was only born on 30th oct 08 so I didnt have a full tax year to look at

they basically said fill the form in, send it and they will work it out, and if I dont qualify now, send a new one after babys is born when Im on tax credits for two!

hope it helps anna
