Toothache

Hi ladies . My wife needs a filling in a tooth and she is having some toothache today . She doesnt really want to have the dental work done because of the injection , and she also doesnt want to take any painkillers . What advice would you give ? Should she be safe to have the dental work done ?

If you tell the dentist that she's pregnant then they will only do things that are safe, and would have to tell you if there was any risk. She should go and get it checked out, just to make sure there isn't an absess or something causing the pain (my SIL had one when she was pregnant and they gave her antibiotics which were pregnancy proof, and she didn't need any fillings etc like she thought she might).

Parcetamol is completely fine to take as a pain killer, just make sure it's regular ones, not the "plus" ones with caffine in.

Hope she feels better soon.

Thanks . She actually went for a check up yesterday and they said it would be safe to have the filling and the anaesthetic . But my sister is a pharmacist and she said we shouldnt get it done unless its an emergency . I think i will phone the midwife first for advice .

If it's local anaesthetic I would think it should be ok (but I'm no doctor). Midwife or GP would be a good call just to make sure.

Nothing against your sister, I'm sure she's a fine pharmacist but I would trust a doctor's/dentist's advice on medication/procedures before a pharmacist.

The anesthetic is a local and as long as it doesn't contain epinephrine, it should be fine in normal doses. Also, narcotic pain relievers are safe for short-term, normal dosage use. Not to mention, if you have to have dental work done, the 2nd trimester is the time to do it. (No, I'm not a doctor, nor a pharmacist, but this is something I've discussed with my OB in depth as I need some serious oral surgery to cut out 3 wisdom teeth.)

I think if she is in pain then having the necessary work done is the way to go. I've not heard of dental work being 'dangerous' (as such) in pregnancy, nor seen it on any 'things to avoid lists'. Toothache makes you so miserable that if she is in pain I wouldn't delay to get done what she needs. The dentist should know what is safe and what is not.

I have an appt on Monday and cannot get work done without an injection. My dentist said to me that if I ever fell pregnant to go and see him to get all my expensive work (crowns etc) done as it will be free

As mentioned above paracetamol is okay in pregnancy (as are some antibiotics ie/ penicillin I believe, I researched this after my tick bite!) so if she does have an absess then there should be safe medication she can take.

Hope she is in less pain soon !

Normally we would just take the dentists word for it , but it was the dentist that actually caused the damage in the first place by drilling too far into the tooth . I dont trust her enough and im definitely getting advice from a doctor or midwife first , whenever they want to answer their phones

I definately agree with all the other ladies, if she is in pain from it, then having a filling is nothing to worry about.

I know its bad, but personally I hadnt even considered the effect of the injection! I've got a check up tomorrow, and already know I need about 5 fillings (i've been holding off going for a while as couldnt afford it!) obviously now that doesnt matter, and my dentist will have a shock at the state of my teeth!

I personally thought the only danger in having dental work done, was that they cannot do xrays whilst pregnant...as far as i'm aware thats the only thing to worry about.
