Hi guys, I wonder if any of you can help.

We go away on 12th August to Portugal (not a long flight) and return on 23rd August. I will be 27+3 wehn we go and 28+4 when we get back.

I'm just trying to work out what to do about travel insurance, should I just get ordinary one? Or do I need a specific one for pregnant women? If so, any ideas which one is best? I've heard post office is quite good, but I don't know if it's too expensive.

Also, do you know if I need a note to fly from my doctor or is it from the midwife? So much to do, so little time!!!

You need insurance to cover anything incase you need to go into hospital for whatever reason. Not sure who to use though, i'm still looking for mine and i go away in just over 4 weeks!!!

Also, i was told by the midwife i didn't need a note to say i was ok to fly and that they didn't really do them, that was until i spoke to the doctors and they said it's not the midwife that issues them, it's the doctors. I'd say call the doctor and ask, they probably won't give you one but it's better to just ask anyway! I will be.

my friend flew at 26 weeks last week and she said all she needed was a scan with the date on it- to prove how many weeks she was-
you should check with your airline as some do not allow you to fly past 28 weeks (ok on your way there but not to get back- and last thing you want is to be stranded!!!) other airlines say 34 weeks but your scan pic will prove to them how far gone you are.

Im flying on wednesday and I will try get a letter from doc just in case (luckily I am seeing the consultant on tues so will as- he may say no of course!)

it all depends on how much of a jobsworth the person you talk to when checking in I reckon-
I wanted a fake tan before going away- but the salon said I need a docs note to say Im ok to have it- I asked my docs and they (as I suspected) laughed me out of the surgery!!!

Im flying on wed AM to canada. Ill be 19 weeks when i go there and 21 when i come back.

I asked at post office, they cover up to 32 weeks but its nearly 50 quid.
My dad searched online and read all the small print and found out that the first one that came up for me on moneysupermarket covered me. Most do untill theyre cut off point (x weeks) then it costs extra.
It cost 10 49. I got that,
You DO need a letter to fly. Mine was called a fitness to fly letter and it took a week for her to write and print on the headed paper then i had to go and pick it up. (it was meant to cost 10 quid but they forgot to charge me ) bingo!

I have anual trip cover with my Barcalay's bank account and when I rang them to tell them I was pregnant they said it did not make any difference and I would be covered just the same as normal. I amflying on August 4th and coming back on August 11th. I am paranoid about flying now because of the swine flu risk but I checked the provision of medication in Italy (where we are going) and they are also giving out Relenza to pregnant women so that made me feel a bit better.

Hi ladies, Im flying british airways to canada on sept 16, i will be 24 weeks going and coming back ( short trip) . You should not need a letter of any sort from midwife or dr unless you are 28 weeks on the return journey, this is straight from BA itself. I was worried and I rang to make sure, from 28 to 32 weeks you need a fitness to fly letter and after 32 they wont take you. Im not sure why at 19 weeks you had to get a letter, was it an insurance condition? Ive also got insurance thru my travel agent for £32, I rang their medical team and they literally do not want to know unless you are over 28 weeks.
Im a bit concerned after reading your post, which airline are you going with and why did you need a letter?

There are travel insurances which will cover you, and baby if born unexpectedly when abroad. Google it and several come up!
Fitness to fly letters. Midwives can, and do write them....free. G.P's charge, latest figure quoted to me was £38.

I just asked at the GP if i needed one and she said well some airlines are different but you should probably carry one just in case. I also read somewhere that if you travel you should take your antenatal notes just incase you land up in the hospital for some reason, But i decided im not going to take my official notes just incase i loose them or soemthing happens so i will write down any info but at the end of the day you can tell the doctor on that end if there has been any problems.
I wouldnt take a scan pic as proof of pregnancy, a letter is better and i wouldnt want to risk loosing a scan pic.
The letter i have will also just proove pregnancy so i can skip q's and get on the aircraft first with children and elderly who need extra time, i felt this was a neccesity because i often get bumped or pushed when boarding and eveeryone trying to get seated. So ill go on early.
The fitness to fly letter i will keep on me just incase anyone asks anything. Id rather be on the safe side and be able to proove it properly. Again it depends on airlines probably, i didnt check with mine but were flying 2 diff airlines and a diff one ont he way back, so the gp advised me to take one and keep it in my passport.

ps, i have no other medical conditions to warrant a letter from gp its purely a fitness to fly letter for pregnancy.

hi hon thanks for that, i think i might get one too just to be on the safe side then, its a bit of a minefield isnt it! Im just hoping my blood pressure stays ok so that i am fine to fly, what with that and swine flu it will be a small miracle if we manage to get on that flight in september!!
