If not all car seats fit in certain cars how do you know what to buy?

My friend went to buy a car seat the other day (from kiddicare I think) and they said not all cars are compatible with the car seats and insisted on knowing what kind of car she has. I thought it would be easy to find out what goes with what but I can't seem to find any websites. I wanted to get mine from argos but now I am a little worried about getting the wrong seat.

umm you should be able to just tell from your car? the car i willl be having at home clearly has little labels on the back two outside seats and the passenger front seat which say 'isofix' and im sure you can get the base's to fit the car but also fit any carseat? if not then just tell the shop what kinda car you have? check your car manual it should say
