Official letter to work for mat leave

I have reached that time when I need to write to my employer, but I'm not sure what to write, it's complicated as I'm on a temporary contract and will not be able to go back to the same employer.

I have drafted something but would love you ladies to look over it and let me know what you think or if you have any letters you have done that we might be able to look over...

I am writing to officially inform you of my pregnancy and due date of 24/10/09. I expect to receive my MAT B from the Midwife on the 14/07/09 and shall pass that on to you the following day.

I hope to commence maternity leave on the 28/09/09 and to return to employment as a Local authority teacher on the 12/04/10 however I will notify you if there is any unexpected change to these plans.

Yours faithfully

Sounds good to me. You don't have to tell them when you intend to return if you're a teacher, so you could leave that bit out.

You'll be like me, you'll probably get the first 6 weeks half pay then the next 33 at standard SMP. If you get another contract for when you retunr though you can safely back date the claim and get the other option at gradually reduing pay for each week ( or in my case, if I don't get to return I'll get redundancy instead).

Search the internet and you'll find examples of letters around, I think there's one on the TDA or Gov bit. Might even be one on your LA's extranet net.

Hi hun,

Sounds ok to me BUT I would recommend leaving out your return date and just stating you wish to take your Ordinary maternity leave plus Additional maternity leave (52 weeks) and should you intend to return to work sooner you will give them the required notice.

Also, you should state whether or not you intend to take any annual leave prior to your maternity leave starting

I'm a teacher so don't have any annual leave as such.
My concern about missing out a return to work date was that If I got a job say a week before Easter I wouldn't have the required time to notify them of my intention to return. I know I won't be returning to work with my current school though as I need to finish a term of NQT before I can go back. Although I guess I could write to them 2 weeks before if it is looking likely I will have a job.
