Exclamation

Nervous!!

At my twenty week scan everything looked great but theres something I noticed which made me worried. The Tech said everything fine but I know they are only allowed to tell you so much. When looking at the brain there was a little black spot (filled with fluid I presume) I saw her measuring it but at the time I was to excited to even ask what it was. Did anyone else notice a little black spot when their babies heads were being examined and if so do you know what it is? Trying not to drive myself crazy here!!

Im sure its fine, when they are doing an OB Complete which is your 20 week scan they have to identify certain parts of the brain on the scan.

i seem to remember from my 20wk scan that the US tech measured something in the brain which sounds similar. apparently its the cerebellum. this is the part which controls senses and motory skills so they measure to check brain function i think. cant be 100% sure but she seemed pretty keen on measuring it and this was the only thing measured in our bub's brain

hope this helps xx

I googled and found this. Looks like it is very normal. And I am pretty sure I remember hearing about this on a show one time about fetal development. Since you said everything else on the baby was totally normal and fine, I would not worry.

Choroid plexus cysts are just a collection of fluid in the part of the baby's brain that makes the fluid that cushions the brain and spinal cord. The "cyst" is just a small build-up of fluid as it moves through the connecting tubes. As the baby grows the tubes get bigger and the fluid moves on. CPC's are almost always gone by 24 weeks and do no harm to the baby's brain.

CPC's look like black spots in the hemispheres of the brain.

Babies with Edward's syndrome (Trisomy 1 are found to have CPC's. However research has shown that babies with Edward's syndrome also have other abnormalities, such as strawberry-shaped head (see image below), overlapping fingers and abnormal feet, heart, kidney or abdominal problems.

It is known that 1% of babies have one or more CPC's in early pregnancy (see image 2 below). In the absence of other markers (isolated CPC's) they are insignificant and Sonographers in many hospitals don't even mention them any more.

Just looking at my US Report, only have it because I work there. Anyhow it says: The fetal brain including the thalami and ventricles are unremarkable in apperance. So I bet they were looking and measureing those to things, just like when they scan the heart they have to identify the four chamber heart

The ventricles are a normal part of the brain and filled with fluid - so the sound from the ultrasound goes right through and they look black. they measure them b/c they're looking for water on the brain (hydrocephalus). Hopefully yours were all good!
