Good luck for your scan tomorrow. I didnt bother filling my bladder at either my 20 week or 21 week scans, and the sonographer didnt say anything.
By 20 weeks the baby is big enough and not hiding behind the pelvic bone to need a full bladder to push it out.

I didn't bother drinking loads before my 20 week scan and the picture quality was great so i don't see why you should drink loads and be uncomfortable during your scan.

My letter says the same as the 12 week one, 1.5 pints to finish 1.5 hours before.. but she did say this was way too much and don't drink half of that next time as I was actually squashing the baby and only managed to stay on the bed for 40 seconds before I had to go pee!! Still got a nice piccy though..

Enjoy!

If you're having a 3D/4D scan, Its not so much drinking just before the scan to have a full bladder, its drinking well a few days to a week before the scan to be totally hydrated.

The recommended amount of water is half your body wieght in ounces a day. So if you're 140 lbs (10 stone) thats 70 ounces of water a day. About 8 good glasses full.

This is taken from a local scan center where we will be going to have our 28 week 4D scan.

What can I do to ensure the best ultrasound pictures of my baby?

The most important thing you can do to ensure good pictures is to drink plenty of water in the days and weeks leading up to your scan! The more hydrated you are, the clearer the pictures will be! By drinking plenty of water you can increase the amount of amniotic fluid surrounding the baby. Unlike standard 2D ultrasound (black and white) 3D/4D ultrasound requires a significant amount of Amniotic Fluid in order to see the baby with great clarity. Keep your body hydrated is also one of the best things that you should do for your entire pregnancy.

I drank loads with my dd's 20 week scan, and the sonographer told me to go and pee as it wasn't needed and would just make it uncomfy for me.

I had a scan at 14 weeks and didnt even need to have a full bladder for this one as the baby is out of the pelvis.

A half full bladder should be fine, I just drank a pint of water a half hour before mine. They get a better picture if there is something in your bladder.
