| Nuchal translucency test Hi everyone - hope you can help me? ... I'm 9 wks preg and i'm 37yrs old, and wondered if any of you have had down's syndrome screening? I am interested in having nuchal translucency test as it's non invasive and can be done early from 11 weeks, but after talking to a male midwife yesterday he more or less said that because of my age the results would prob come back high and I will still have to have amnio???!!!
I have since spoke to another lovely screening midwife who has re-assured me that the nuchal is combined with blood test and can give 98% accurate indication. To me it seems worth £185 to have the nuchal test as there are no risks of mc.
Has anyone had experience of both tests? Help i'm very confused. Sorry for long txt xxx | | | | Status: Offline

| I dont see why it would come back high just because of your age hun, my sister is 40 and just had her 3rd baby and she was low risk according to the nuchal scan & bloods. | | | | Status: Offline

| Hi there. I'm 35 and had the NT test. When they combined my age-related risk with the NT result and the blood results I came out with a risk of 1 in 7041. Such low risk there was no need for an amnio therefore no risk of mc. I'd try the NT screen first...

| Hiya, I had the nuchal scan when I was pregnant with my son back in 2000. I took part in a study and had to travel to Guys & St Thomas' hospital in London to get it done, but it was well worth it. I just had the scan though and my risk came back at 1 in 9000 odd, but I was 18!
I wasn't offered any screening with my daughter, but this time around I had the double blood test at 16 weeks. I got a letter at 18 weeks saying I was low risk. High risk is classed as having a risk of less than 1 in 250. I suppose the question you need to ask yourself is whether you would want to have further testing if you were given those odds? I personally wouldnt have had an amnio because of the miscarriage risk at 1% its the equivalent of 1 in 100 which is a higher risk than 1 in 250 if you see what I mean.
If you are in a position where you can afford it, and it would put your mind at rest, then I would go for it. | | | | Status: Offline

| yes, I agree with the above ladies... without testing my age-related risk was something like 1 in 400 (I'm 35). That combined with the NT scan and blood tests at 12 weeks, it was increased to 1 in 17,000. I am very glad I had it, it was a huge relief to know the risk was so small and I didn't need invasive, diagnostic testing. | | | | Status: Online

| Hi -i'm 33 and also also had the NT scan and blood test work done and the probability level came back at 1 : 8115 risk which was considered very low risk so no amnio was required.
Also I think you need to be very clear in your own mind that if you do have the NT scan and its comes back as high risk then what would you do anyway - would you proceed with the amnio anyway, if not then maybe worth not knowing.
