Do you need to drink a lot before the 20 week scan?

My hospital are ALWAYS running late. I drank lots before my last scan and then despite me being the first appointment, they made me wait for half an hour with a full bladder and no clue of when the sonographer would turn up. I don't want to do that again, especially since I'm a late afternoon appointment and they will be running late! I heard you don't need such a full bladder for the 20 week scan - is that true? Please say it is!

I've never had a full bladder for any of my scans and the images have been really clear. My OB hasn't mentioned it once to me either.

My 13 week scan letter said to drink a pint and a half of water 1 hour before the appointment. I did, and the images were really clear. My 20 week scan letter didn't mention drinking anything, but I assumed I had to do the same. Thing is, I didn't pee before I drank the oddles of water, and then when I got the the hospital I was left waiting for over half an hour too!! I was so desperate to pee, I was nearly in tears - honestly, it was bloody painful!

When I hopped onto the couch and she put the gel on, the sonographer said, 'oh dear - you have got a very full bladder haven't you??' and I swear I was nearly wetting my pant when she pushed the scan thing over my tummy... She made me go and pee because the image was all fuzzy and I have never felt such relief!!

My letter told me I did, which is never fun for me because I have such a weak bladder. Anyway they were running pretty much on time but once the sonographer started pushing on me, especially lower down I was so uncomfortable. It got to the point where DH had to ask if I was ok cos apparently I had tears in my eyes the discomfort was that bad. It also meant that I couldn't concentrate fully on the scan. Thankfully the lovely sonographer asked what the problem was and when I explained she checked the last couple of things quickly, let me out to the loo, then I came back so she could take the pics. Have to say I fully emptied my bladder, didn't dare try to hold any back, and when I went back the pic on the screen was just as clear. I'd advise to drink some water so you've got some fluid in your bladder but don't worry about filling yourself to bursting point xx (Incidentally when I booked for my private gender scan today I asked if she needed me to have a full bladder and she said no, so it can't make that much of a difference to the clarity of the pics!)

Just say that you have drank loads today! And if they mention your baldder being empty remark that you may be dehydrated as you were very sick yesterday... damn morning sickness!

My scan at 5/3 was on an empty bladder... I lied and said I had drank, which I did, for half an hour after I went to the loo! It made no difference really. A full bladder just makes it easier to find your uterus is all.

I'd think it'd be pretty hard to miss my uterus right now... ;-)
