Prenatal Paternity Test

Hi everyone,
I've only just found out recently that I'm pregnant and I'm worried about starting my pregnancy off with doubts of who the father of my child is. After the shock settled to excitement/anxiety I realized I really do want to have the father there to experience the first few month of his child's life. I'll save you all the details but the fact is I want to have a prenatal paternity test done and I don't have a lot of knowledge on the subject. I've been trying to look online but I'm only getting frustrated and confused and a little worried with what I have been reading about CVS and Amnio testing.
I would really appreciate any information or personal stories anyone has on the topic. Thanks for your help!!!

Congratulations on your pregnancy.

I don't have any personal experience to share but basically the usual option is a post natal test. You can use cheek swabs or blood tests and they compare your DNA, the babies and the possible dad(s).

If you wanted it antenatally, the only way to get DNA is by an invasive procedure to get cells from the pregnancy (ie CVS or amnio). Which are the tests which are used to check the babies DNA when looking for things like Downs syndrome if the pregnancy is high risk.

However these are not totally without risk. The CVS has a 2% miscarriage rate (and amnio 1%).

Is it crucial you know before the delivery?

I agree with the ladies above, find out how quickly it can be done after the birth. You may only need to wait a few months. Good luck. x

i can understand that not knowing who the father is would be quite frustrating for you but i've heard that these tests can be very harmful and even cause m/c so if you can, maybe best to wait. speak to ur doc or midwife tho, they should be able to offer some guidance!

xx

Thanks for all your suggestions Kind of confirmed my suspicions about this testing. I don't want to take any chances and it sounds like its not really worth it.

Actually, I had a similar experience only in my case, my boyfriend actually demanded that I have the test done (i know, nice guy right?). I was young and naive and didnt realize I had a say in the matter until I realized what it was he was asking me to do. I wasn't ready to put my baby at risk for his stupid doubts so I went on online and found a Laboratory by searching on Google that can do the same Prenatal Testing but they only ask for a blood sample from the mother. It's all done over the phone and through the mail so there were no specialist's appointments and it cost a lot less. You can even send in toothbrush or hair samples for testing and no one will be the wiser. I would suggest at least checking it out, it definitely helped in my case.
Best of luck and it may feel like it, but know you're not alone.

I had a cvs, not for the same matter, but to find out what was wrong with my baby. She had edwards. I didn't misscarry but had to make a decision on ending my pregnancy. It was uncomfortable, but not painful. X
