'Older Mums' question

Just a question for those 'older mums-to-be'

What special advice were you given by your midwife and what do they tell you about the tests you can have?

I have my first MW appt next Wednesday

TIA xx

Hey, I am not exactly what you would call an older mam, I will be 32 by the time this lil one arrives. However they still suggested I have the test for downs when I was pg with my last 2. So I expect they will say the same this time. I declined the test as I would find it too worrying if I had to make any decisions if the odds were very high for downs.

But getting to my point, my big sister was 36 when she had her first and over 40 when she had her third. She was also told to have the test due to her age and she also declined. Her 3 lil ones are all fine.

Looking back I have not actually answered your question, just rambled... sorry. Hope you get the answer your looking for.

xx

Thats not too bad then. I thought you were gonna say 50 or something...lol..

My sister did say she found the last pregnancy really hard, cos she was older and got tired more quickly, but she did have 2 other kiddies at 3 and 5 at the time. So I guess she had her hands full.

My 2 others are 13mths and 3yrs now, so I really get where she was coming from. I also have a 9yr old step daughter... I think I must be mad!

Thats good, if you dont look that old. People always stand with their mouths open when they see me with my lot, cos they think I look about 23 and cant do the maths quick enough.. they just say 'OMG you must have started young'. I do like to have a bit of fun with it sometimes mind...lol...

Mealtimes are a little mental, but we always seem to get fed. We have 2 dogs too...

I'm 34, will be almost 35 when the "lentil" is born, so I've been offered all the tests. They will do this between weeks 16 and 20, so I only have a little bit of information now. We went for genetic counselling, as my niece has a developmental delay. They tested my blood for any "translocations" (when parts of genes have flipped with each other - makes them likely to flip in the baby, and increases the risk of problems). They'll do another blood test and then figure out whether my chances are less than 1/200 (the ratio of developmental problems that occur for 34 year old women) or greater than 1/200. If my chances appear to be greater than 1/200, then they'll offer me an amniocentesis test.

This is about all that I can remember - sorry if it is so sparse! However, they were great at explaining it all to both me and my husband, who is ESL.

Good luck!

A
