empty gestational sac

Had 1st scan yesterday after 3rd IUI attemp and positive HPT .
They could only see the gestational sac but everything else was absent. They said I was 7 weeks but I told them that my cycle was 32 days, they didn't really comment.
After 4 different people coming to look at the scan I was told it was a miscarriage and given my options...wait for it to happen naturally or have a D&C. I was told I could have a week to think about it.
I went back to the reproductive medicine unit who were more sympathetic and ws told that if nothing had happened by next week then I should have another scan to be 100%.
I told them about a friend of mine who had a similar experience and was told she would miscarry until they found a baby at 8 weeks.

Has anyone else had this happen?
I'm feeling so upset but trying to stay positive just in case.
