Iron Supplement

My doctor put me on 324mg of iron a day. I started taking this yesterday and have been sick ever since. Has anyone else had this problem, if so what did you do to help? Thanks ladies.

Iron (usually in the form of ferrous sulphate tablets) is notorious for upsetting the gut - I imagine you're a bit anaemic and that's why you're on them. See your doc and see if your body can make up the exra red blood cells without the iron or whether they need to try you on a different formulation.

Thank you. Yes, I am anemic. I'm suppose to take iron all of the time and now that I'm pregnant is essential for the baby's development.

Iron supplements are hard on the stomach! Are you taking it with food? If not I'd highly recommend it. Also make sure not to ingest any kind of calcium when you take the supplement as it will cancel out the iron. Oh and take the iron with OJ, it will help your body absorb it better

Thank you so much! I was trying to take the iron on an empty stomach (recommended by my pharm). I will take it after a meal tomorrow and with OJ. I sure hope this gets rid of the upset stomach. I don't think I can go like this for 6 months.

You do absorb more iron if you take it on an empty stomach but it will tear your stomach to pieces!

I get very sick from my prenatals , some nights when im real sick already I` cant bring myself to take them . try chewing some mint gum or sucking on peppermint candy , also preggie pops work when im feeling sick however the preggie drops make me feel even sicker , or maybe see if the doc can give you something to make your belly feel better

I take or will be anyways - took when pregnant with my son - a prenatal called preg vit. It splits up the iron, and other vitamins into two pills. One morning one night. One you take soon after/before eating and the other on empty stomach. It's suppose to help you not get sick...
