I'm having mine done next week but I'm in the US so things are different here. My insurance will cover it since I'm over 35 and can use advanced maternal age as a medical reason for having it done. Otherwise I'd have to pay for it myself too.

You would only be offered a nuchal scan if you are at high risk, either over 35 or with history of a baby with chromosome problems. Its a lot more intense than a normal booking scan as they are qualified to detect abnormalities with baby. Not something to be taken lightly really.

i think a nuchal scan reconfirms your preganacy and checks for chromosome abnormalities (down syndromes). on the nhs u should have a 12 week scan and then at 16 weeks be offered bloods to asses the risk of downs or spina bifida then i think they'll give u the scan if you come back as high risk.

Hope everything goes well for you and have a nice break away.

In my area they offer the nuchal scan to all women no matter how old they are. It is combined with the 12 week scan, they measure the nuchal fold at the same time as the standard things for the 12 week scan. I then have to have a blood test the same day to test my hormone levels (i think) to enable them to come up with a percentage chance of problems.

In my hospital they only offer the amnio sentesis(sp) invasive test if the results from the Nuchal test come back high risk.
If the nuchal scan is something that you would like. The private scanning clinics offer them. Not sure the prices mind.
