Hubby and I were out at a little country restaurant today (it's a hidden gem just outside our community with incredible food). We went to the counter to pay, and the waitress sneezed, then paused. I made a little joke, asking if she was waiting for a second one, and she said 'nah, I just have to stand like this (legs crossed) for a minute'. She said her hubby makes fun of her, but he should try having three kids and then sneezing without peeing! I laughed, and on the spur of the moment thought I'd tell this incredibly nice, friendly woman that I'm expecting.
I said 'oh boy, can't wait for that part - I just found out I'm pregnant'. She asked how far along, wished us tons of luck, and was incredibly sweet. I've been very wary of telling strangers or acquaintances, even though a few times there have been moments it would have fit into the conversation nicely. It's been worrying me a bit that when I start to show I'll probably get all sorts of gratuitous advice from strangers, but after today I'm a little less leery - at least about telling women who've been through the experience already.
My friends have told me to go to a prenatal class (later on), and not to be afraid of approaching and talking to other pregnant women, but it's scared me a bit because I've read/heard a few horror stories (not to mention that my horrid mother in law reacted badly to the news - she was the last one I told before today, and it upset me so badly I was afraid to talk to anyone else).
Now, thanks to one very nice woman, I'm less reluctant to share and talk to strangers about being pregnant - as long as they're nice people! It's amazing how one person can make your day, just by saying something kind.
