I'm not sure it's very common over here yet. I got a leaflet about it when I was in CA at Easter and I have to say if it were more readily available here, I'd be seriously considering it. It's not been mentioned at all to me.

When I got my Emma's diary from the midwife, it had a leaflet inside it. Part of it was about Cord Blood Banking. It look interesting but what do you do I dont know. Say to the midwife as they cut the cord, oh keep that I need the blood :S

I think if you can get the cord stored safely then you should definitely do it. I am definitely going to do it regardless of the expense but I am also a Leukemia / Bone marrow/ stem cell transplant nurse and have seen first hand how invaluable a stored cord could have been to some families.

God forbid anything should happen to our children but you can use the cord for either themselves or for a sibling and it is totally a life saving measure.
If you are lucky enough to have this offered and have a hospital willing and able to store the cord then you should totally go for it.

I'd like to, but at nearly $3,000.00 we can't afford it. I think it's a brilliant idea, and if we had the money we definitely would (and if I can get the money together, it's still not out of the question). One of our friends is alive today because of stem cell technology; if her mother had the option of cord blood banking her journey likely would have been a lot easier, and the outcome more certain.
