Caffeine and pregnancy

What is it with Caffeine and pregnancy?? I would only drink about 1 cup of very weak tea a day but I would drink about 2 500ml btls of diet coke. The midwife told me to try and cut down on caffeine. Was just wondering how caffeine affects pregnancy

Its a stimulant and so it raises heart rate and metabolism. That can have an effect on your baby. Its normally ok for most people to drink the equivalent of 3 mugs of instant coffee a day.

Coffee, tea, cola and chocolate all contain it. Here is a guide I found. You can have up to 300g (as a guide) a day.

• 1 mug of instant coffee = 100mg
• 1 cup of instant coffee = 75mg
• 1 cup of brewed coffee = 100mg
• 1 cup of tea = 50mg
• 1 can of cola = 40mg
• 1 can of "energy" drink = 80mg
• 1 x 50g bar of plain chocolate = up to 50mg
• 1 x 50g bar of milk chocolate = up to 25mg

I am still drinking plenty of cups of tea... but I am trying to alternate them... I sometimes have decaf and sometimes Tetley full caf - my m/w said it's fine as it is important that I get plenty of fluid just as long as I am sensible about it.

Some recent studies (from what I've read) indicate that caffeine, especially in first tri, can increase your chance of a miscarriage so doctors recommend that you cut back (unfortunately I can't remember the exact numbers on how much you are allowed to drink). I did drink some caffeine in first tri (MS prevented me from drinking it often) and do drink 1 cola a day now.

I read that you should try and cut out caffeine in pregnancy. There is some evidence that caffeine can possibly (according to this research) affect fertility and can increase the risks of miscarriage in the early stages. Some doctors now reccomend cutting it out, in particular in the First Trimester.

I have cut out caffeine completely, just in case. Twinings decaff Earl Grey tea is really nice and tastes just like the real thing, their normal decaf tea is not so bad (does taste a little dish watery). Most decaf real coffees are quite good, especially the ones you can buy in Starbucks and Costa Coffee (if you are meeting mates for coffee) - and they will never know you are drinking decaf if you are trying to keep your pregnancy secret for now. Also Redbush tea is quite nice too.
