Anyone with a very new/young OBGYN?

Hi all!
I went to see my GP yesterday and he ran all the standard bloodwork, put me on pelvic rest (due to previous m/c and uterine surgery) and said he'd call with the name of an OBGYN.

True to their word, the office called today with the referral appointment. I went onto the Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons 'doctor search' web page, where you can find out a bit about your doc, or search for a specialist or new GP. My doc's stats worry me a bit. He graduated from top quality institutions, but he's so NEW!! Graduated from med school in 2001, then finished training for his specialty and became an OBGYN in summer 2006.

I'm high-risk, and have a condition that's quite rare (uterine AVM). My very experienced OBGYN in Toronto (who I wish I could continue seeing, but he's now two hours from home) had only ever seen one case before in his practice. I ended up in the ER a few times when the problem initially surfaced, and none of the docs had ever seen it before -- one of the paramedics who took me the second time didn't even know it was possible!

My hubby feels secure with a young doc, says he'll be up on all the latest and greatest technology and information, but I'm a bit frightened of his inexperience. I may bring it up when we meet, hopefully he won't be upset but I want to make sure he's able to care for me properly.

Anyone else with a young/new OB? If so, how are you finding the experience?

I have an older OB.........but if I were you and you are uncomfortable with someone so young I'd say go ahead and look for another OB. You need to feel safe and secure with your OB. Good luck

I was going to say the younger ones are more up to date with the latest issues and have it all fresh in their mind. Yes they are lacking in the experiences compared to the older ones, but I guess he has been doing it 2 years so would have dealt with a fair few cases. I'd speak with him let him know your concerns, as he may then go and research the condition and be up to speed. Like you say your older one had only ever seen one case so I guess if it is that rare, not even the older ones may know what's going on. The younger one may be more inclined to research the issue and find out a lot more. Thats just MO.

Thank you all so much for the feedback and advice. I'm definitely going to give this doc at least one visit, but I think I will bring up my concerns with him so I know where we stand right from day one.

I'd be concerned too, just speak with him about it. He's fresh out of med school, though! All the info is fresh in his mind.
He won't get upset if you talk to him about it I'm sure he'll understand your concerns.
