I'm Currently Feeling: | Pap Smear While Pregnant... Is This Safe Hi I am from the UK living in Canada and the policy in Canada and the States is to do a pap smear while doing your initial workup... its very bizarre as I was of the understanding that you really should not be doing anything to your cervix if it can be avoided.
It seems to be the normal procedure and police here.. should I be worried. HAs anyone experienced this? Apparently there are no risks apart from causing a little bit of bleeding.
Any comments would be great. | | | | Status: Offline

I'm Currently Feeling: | I got a pap at my first pre-natal visit. The midwife told me that some bleeding may occur and noted to me that it was VERY safe otherwise they would never do it. I had zero bleeding and only felt sore for a few hours. |

I'm Currently Feeling: | I'm from Canada. I turned it down. I already had one this year but my doctor wanted to do another. I would have gotten another doctor if she had insisted. |

| I had one, and I was fine. No bleeding and no pain. It was a lot better then my previous ones when I was not pregnant. |

I'm Currently Feeling: | I am in UK and my MW asked about my last smear (which was long over due) and she said we'd leave it until after the pregnancy, I guess everywhere is just different. I am sure they wouldn't do it if it were risky though. |

Me too!
It is unadvisable to have a smear when pregnant. My MW and GP both said so!
I definately wouldn't!!!! |

I'm Currently Feeling: | I will be refusing one too. I have to have regular 6 monthly ones at the moment and I had an all clear in January, so I can't see that anything will have severely changed between now and end of the year. IN FACT I'd rather they didn't poke around down there as I'ma already a pre term labour potential risk!!! |

I'm Currently Feeling: | Forgot to mention that with the swab they took, they also tested for certain STD's. It's required at my docs for all first pre-natal visits. I think it's crucial for your baby's sake. Knowing my LO has a safe healthy place to grow is very reassuring. |
