Prenatal check-up / scan protocol in your area

Just wondering what the prenatal check-up / scan protocol was where you all are. Not very intensive for us. I have just had my first (6 wk) apt. and my Doc took my word for it that I am pg (she asked if I had done a blood test and when 1st period was & when I got my bfp). So there is no blood test this time round (I did get one last time). At 9 wks I will get the Maternal Serum Testing (for Down's, Spina Bifida, etc.) along with blood tests for immunities to childhood diseases plus routine screenings for certain STDs (these are given to all pg women), along with a blood type test (to see if it has changed? ) etc. At 10ish weeks I will have my next apt & we will try to find a heartbeat, and then at 15 wks we repeat the Maternal Serum Testing. Finally at 18 wks we will do the one and only ultrasound (provided no problems are discovered during maternal serum testing, etc.)

Am wildly jealous of those of you who get early ultrasounds!

Yep, that's it.

Thought I was going to be able to hear the heartbeat at today's apt, but quickly learned: just because there IS a heartbeat, doesn't mean you can hear it! Apparently my doc's range is 10-12 weeks for hearing the heartbeat.

Plus, at the scans they won't tell you what the sex of the baby is. The theory being that they need only share information that's medically necessary. Unless, of course, you somehow get yourself classified as high risk, in which case you get to have your ultrasound in the cushy upstairs area attended by an actual phyisician and not just a tech, and the physician will actually tell you what is going on instead of typing it all down to be shared with your GP, and they will tell you whatever the hell you like. Sex of the baby? Sure! They will also give you pics! One can get this blessed classification just by being 35 or over. As for me, I don't qualify (thankfully when it all comes down to it) so I will have to fork over some dough to get a private scan. I hate how cold the public system is with low-risk patients though.

Hey hun, my doc told me I'd get called for a scan about 12 weeks and unless there was a problem that's likely to be the only one I'll have.

PS, I went to the docs a week past on thursday, I was told to wait for a letter from the hospital and haven't heard anything since. I've got no idea about blood tests, urine tests, etc although she said to go back with a urine sample in 4 weeks (i.e. at 8 weeks pregnant)

I feel your pain insomnimama, I also live in canada (bc) I my situation is much the same as yours. Very quick first appt at 5weeks, internal exam and (hopefully) heartbeat at 10 weeks (this friday for me!). No scan until 18-22 weeks though. I also would kill for an early scan. . .
