Crappy news at appointment yesterday...

My urine is good - no sugar, no protein, nothing bad. I haven't gained any weight, I've actually lost 3 pounds since 10 days ago when I was at the doctor last. They didn't check the babies heartbeat though - we were disappointed...

Now, on to the not so great....

My doctor didn't like my blood sugars from the past 2 weeks and my Hemoglobin A1C wasn't too great (that tests for overall sugar levels). Today I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes - already - at 10 weeks pregnant. I am being referred to to an endocrinologist who specializes in GD. I also have to begin seeing my OB every 2-3 weeks rather than every 4-5 weeks. I can have no sugar now - none - and only 1 serving of "white" carbs like rice and bread daily. My OB was talking about how if I didn't get this under control my baby could have serious problems, the placenta could have problems, and I could have problems. I feel so guilty.... I started this pregnancy out weighing more than I should, not exercising nearly enough, and not eating the best. I feel like I could have prevented this. I feel like if something happens to this baby it's my fault.

Aw hun, do you know you could have prevented this? If not then don't put yourself through any more heartache than you are already going through. Plent of overweight women don't have this in pregnancy so its unfortunate that you are one of the one who has. I don't know much about the condition, but follow the docs advice, stop blaming yourself and I'm sure everything will be fine xxx Massive

I am sorry to hear about your news. I am not knowledgeable about gestational diabetes but all I can say is please try not to blame yourself. The important thing is that you are getting the proper care.

GD is completely out of your control hun. Its mostly to do with genetics. Yes your weight can give you a higher predisposition to it, but it does not cause it. So dont beat yourself up about something that very clearly isnt your fault. Just look after yourself now hun and we'll all be thinking of you both.

I agree with the other ladies, its not your fault, and at least now they know you can get the proper care rather than leave it unknown

sorry to hear you have GD, i was upset when i was diagnosed, but its not as bad as i thought. you have to eat well, like you said no sugar/cookies/candy/fruit juice and all that and be careful with your carbs. at first its really hard you feel like you cant eat anything for fear your sugar will get too high. you do get over this though and learn what works for you. If you keep it under control the baby wont get too big and you will feel fine. my baby is a good weight and i do cheat from time to time. I dont find testing with my glucometer painful at all. There are other girls on here with GD who can probably give you some more advice. Sorry that you have to go through this challenge but it really is manageable vwith some effort. Wishing you a happy and healthy rest of your pregnancy.

It's not your fault, and thinking that way will only get you more stressed. My friend had perfect BMI when she got pregnant, she was going to gym, eating right - basically did everything she was supposed to, and she got GD. It can happen to anyone.

Sorry to hear this hun but please please don't blame yourself. Like the other girls aleady said, it's NOT your fault and can happen to anyone. At least you have found out early and can get the help and support which you and baby need.
xx
