Heavy exercise - what's the status quo?

What do you think about exercise and pregnancy?

In my case, I'm only recently pregnant, and i'm worried that i might over exercise, i do about 2 hours intensive cycling, and hours of walking as well as stretching each day. What stretches should i avoid? Do i need to cut back on my exercise a bit? I actually attribute my healthy lifestyle to getting pregnant, that and the royal jelly.
I burn more calories than i eat, so i've just stocked my fridge up, as i read i should be eating about 2000 cal a day (110 lbs, 5 foot 2) i eat about 1200, but with the exercise, should i be eating more?
I've not had any morning sickness or food cravings, only i've noticed i've been eating more, and a lot healthier before i even knew!

whoa whoa whoa there...Hello and Welcome...How far along are you?? No vigorous exercises and you have to keep your heartbeat under like 140 I think..You can stretch and still workout but nothing intense...Your growing a baby now and you don't work to overwork your body even more and strain it...Good Luck

I got told that you should be having 2500 kcal a day (a lot i know!) you should be able to keep up the excercise your body is used to but NO MORE than you did previously. You should not be losing weight i.e. you should not burn off more than you eat, as yourbaby will be needing those cals too. As dannyboygirl said youshould not put extra strain on your heart by making it go over 140bmp as you will be making up to 50% extra blood over the next few months, which is already a large strain on your body. You may wish to do either the cycling OR the walking in a day not both. At the end of the day providing you feel fine no cramping or bleeding or shortness of breath and dizziness you will be fine. Your body knows you better than any doctor and any of us and it will tell you when it is not coping. Listen to your body don't over do it and have a nice and enjoyable pregnancy. Also if you must do execercise try excersies in water aquarobics, swimming, things like that where your body is supported and is not putting extra strain on your limbs and joints.

I've heard if you've been exercising before you were pregnant, like a regular thing, then it's fine, your body's used too it. So therefore you can carry on. But if you only exercise every now and again, DON'T start now whilst your pregnant, cause your body aint used too it. I'd just take it down a notch and not do as much, but i'd still carry on with the exercise. xx

Nemmie has given you some great advice there I would definatly listen to what she's said

You shouldn't be doing more excercise than your body is used to, and don't over streach or lift anything heavy during your excercise. I think the general advice is that this early on you only need an additional 300 calories on top of the recommended daily amount for a woman - however your body may ask for more. Keep rehydrated - as you will need more liquids now.

It's good that you're keeping fit, don't forget at the end of all this your body has to go through the most grudeling physical it will ever encounter, there is evidence that women who remain active during pregnancy find labour easier.

And do not over do it. If you feel lightheaded, dizzy or faint stop immediately Remember, at the end of the day it is not worth the health of your baby.

And congratulations btw

I think keeping your body temp down is important too. But exercising is good, I just wouldn't over do it with extensive lifting and stretching. There is lots of information out there about what is good and not good to do. Your committed! I wish I was like that. I just try to walk a lot to get that blood flowing and keep some excess weight off, as you do eat more. Swimming is really good while your preg too...congrats btw!
