Up until recently the UK government adviced that 1 unit a week was OK, now they recommend not at all. The truth is nobody quite knows. Experts do seem to think that if you are going to have a drink that it is best saved for the 2nd trimester as most of the internal organs have formed so it is less likely to cause defects.
I think you have to use your best judgement. But remember there is no known 'safe amount'. If you do decide to drink: Obviously don't become drunk (this could also cause a danger if you to fall over), don't drink if you can avoid it, and stay away from the hard stuff.
So far I have had half a glass of champers on my Birthday, and a tiny amount of red wine at a . But to be honest I think I'll be going without, I feel too guilty. If it is something I can give up to help my baby I think I should do it, no alchol for 6 more months is better than the guilt I'd feel if something was wrong with my baby.
I also have this memory of an episode of an Oprah Winfrey show I saw when I was a kid, she had a bowl of egg yolks and she started throwing shots of whisky in it, and the alchol was coooking the eggs. She said "if you drink when you are pregnant this is what you are doing to your baby's
Maybe try half a glass of bubbly topped up with orange juice? Remember if you haven't had a drink for a while it might go to your head faster than you think.
