optional tests - Nuchal Scan/blood tests

Hi, just wondered whether you ladies opted for the NT scan/optional blood tests or not. Got to arrange PDQ if we are having them. doctor said 90% of her patients don't bother... need some guidance please!

Thanks

Kaz x

I had the blood tests, got the results back toward the end of last week i'm in 'very low risk' category. as ryder said i dont see why anyone wouldn't want the test, we felt we wanted it so if there was anything wrong we could research it etc.
but like uv said we up north dont get the option of the nuchal scan up here where as my cousin - lives in berkshire gets the scan as routine apparently!?

good luck with what ever you decide xx

I opted not to test. Not b/c I don't want to know if baby might have a problem, but b/c the results are very often false positives. That being the case, if you get a positive, the next step is amnio which is very risky. I knew that even if baby was downs, I wouldn't terminate, so it wouldn't matter. Then my dr. said that the 20 week u/s could tell just as well as the blood test, but you would just be so much farther along (termination wise).

Hi

Just to let you know that I opted to have an NT scan done last week. I was offered the quadruple test but after some thought, decided on the NT as it seems to be the most accurate test available at the moment and I am 34.

Anyway, even though the scan was expensive, it was worth every penny! We had a wonderful consultant obsterician who explained every detail to us. The scan lasted over half an hour and she pointed out all the features e.g bladder, stomach ,brain etc.

We even saw bubs having a drink and then getting hiccups afterwards!

We both felt that the scan was very thorough and felt so relieved afterwards to know that things are looking good. While there are never any guarantees, the result came back as a 1 in 8100 chance of bubs having a problem.

I personally feel a lot more settled knowing that I had it done but obviously, we are all different.

Good luck with whatever you decide xxx

If you can afford to have it then I'd recommend it. I had it at 13+5 so right at the last minute as I was on holiday for 2 weeks before. It was a great experiance just as Frenchy has described and just a couple of days later I had the results.

x
