| I will be going to the hospital. This is my first baby, I have no idea what to expect, and I know that I am safe with my OBGYN (who is with me from now until my baby is born) and I know I can get the epidural if I need it.
I hope that everyone who decides to have a home birth really does their research. Things can go very wrong.
BTW, delivering babies while laying on your back is completely natural, and in the long run, the most comfortable, remeber labour isnt 5 mins long, its hours. Most mammals lay down to deliver. lol... most human do too... except in some places they squat.
Good luck to anyone who decides to brave having a home birth. | | | | Status: Offline

I'm Currently Feeling: | Ryder, I am very sorry, but things can go just as wrong in the hospital. Usually because of the 'wonderful' interventions that are soooo common now. Look at the statistics, and home births come out on top every time. There are a very few percentage of women who will need serious medical care during their pregnancy, but for the majority of women, they need no help at all. Hospital births only became the norm about 60-70 years ago. Before that just about everyone was born at home.
When you birth on your back, you automatically compress the pelvis by something like 20%. It also decreases the ablility of your abdominal muscles to work as well as they could squating. Plus you lose the affects of gravity. Pushing a baby UP and then out, is way harder than just out. The ONLY reason women birth on their back is because it is the easiest way for a doctor to have access to that area. Animals may lay down, but never on their backs, they move a lot during their labors, trust me, I grew up in th country and have seen lots of animals give birth. Never did I see one stuck on it's back in a bed hooked up to IVs. Before male doctors too over births, the most common birth position was squating. | | | | Status: Offline

I'm Currently Feeling: | This is true, it makes the pelvic area smaller, which leads the doctor to think your pelvic area isn't big enough and they section you. I'd have a home-birth if I could get a midwife but because I'm high risk, I'm banging my head against a wall. | | | | Status: Offline

I'm Currently Feeling: | Im really not citisising anyone who wants a hospital birth with drugs just to be clear! And im not preaching but I have to say I agree with everything said by Uv and samantha. I think my issue with a hospital birthisnt how good the staff are or how clean the hospital is nor is it just about having home comforts around me but moreove it is about time and choice. Sooooo many births are intervened with when its not needed merely to speed up labour and to move things along. There is no evidence to state that things are more likely to go wrong at a home birth, in fact quite the opposite.
I agree if something does go wrong or I change my mind about drugs there will be a delay getting to the hosptial but this risk balanced with the positives of home birth are hugely outweighed. | | | | Status: Offline

I'm Currently Feeling: | I'm going to use the local midwife-run birth centre and opt for a natural water birth there. I'd love to have a water birth at home, we just don't have the space so the birth centre seems like the best option for us (at the mo!)

Good luck to anyone who decides to brave having a home birth. | its proven laying down narrows ur birth canal its better all fours and walking helps as baby drops ready for birth so haw the hell can laying on a bed on ur back help baby drop

Good luck to anyone who decides to brave having a home birth. | It seems you're the one who needs to do some research.
If this is your first baby & you don't know what to expect, how can you know what the best position to give birth in is? I suffered a very bad tear from the midwives telling me to push harder & faster whilst lying on my back with my legs up in stirrups (they made me get into that position). My daughter was tiny, I doubt I would have torn at all if I'd been able to give birth on my own terms. In the end they had to spend 2 HOURS stitching me up in the operating theatre.
I'm not "braving" a home birth, I'm planning it very carefully & I'm really looking forward to it. Yes, things can go wrong, but I'll have my midwife with me & I'm only 10 minutes from the hospital in case of an emergency.
I feel very strongly about this now.. I really don't want to have my baby in hospital. If me & LO are healthy, why should I give birth in a place where sick people go?
